Silt Trap Calculation (Msma I)

This document provides the design details for a silt trap, including: 1) Calculating the required catchment area, soil type, and design storm interval. 2) Determining the time of concentration for overland flow and adopting a value of 15 minutes. 3) Sizing the sediment basin by calculating the required surface area and total volume based on soil type, then determining dimensions for the settling and sediment storage zones within the specified volumes. 4) Specifying dimensions for the overall basin based on the zone dimensions and side slopes, and sizing the outlet pipe with a number of orifices to drain the basin within 24 hours. 5) Beginning the design of an emergency spill

Title SILT TRAP Date:
( Based Volume 15 : Construction Sediment BMPs)

SILT TRAP DESIGN

A DETAILS

1 Catchment area for development = 2.55 acre

1.100 ha

2 Adopted basin type is an earth embankment and perforated outlet as shown in Standard Drawing SD I-16(c)
(Volume 15: Construction Sediment BMPs)

3 Soil type = sandy loam

4 As the construction period will be less than 2 year,

the design storm = 3 months ARI
*construction is upstream of an sensitive area
B Determine Overland Flow Time of Concentration

1 Values of Manning's for overland flow, n = 0.02

( Table 14.2)

2 Overland sheet flow, L = 204 m

3 Gradient at = 1: 200.0
Slope of overland flow, S = 0.500 %

4 Use Friend's Formula

Time of concentration,
to = 107 n L0.333 / S0.2 = 15 min

Adopt to = 15 min

C Sizing of Sediment Basin

1 Predominent soil type = Type C ( Refer Table 39.4)

2 Required surface area = 292 m2/ha (Table 39.5)

3 Required total volume = 350 m3/ha (Table 39.5)

4 Surface area required for the site = 292 x 1.1

= 321 m2
(Note: this is the average surface area for the settling zone volume, i.e. at mid-depth)

5 Total basin volume required for the site = 350 x 1.1

= 385 m3

a) Settling Zone

1 Required settling zone, V1 = 193 m3 (half the total volume)

2 Try settling zone depth, y1 = 0.6 m (min 0.6 m)

3 Try a settling zone average width, W1 = 15 m

4 The settling zone average length, L1

= V1/(W1 X y1) = 21 m

5 Check settling zone dimension ( Page 39-16, Section c)

a) L1/y1 ratio = 36 < 200 OK

b) L1/W1 ratio = 1.43 < 2 NOK, Provide Baffles

file:///conversion/tmp/scratch/507280080.xlsx
DR YG TAN JURUTERA PERUNDING SDN BHD

b) Sediment Storage Zone

1 Required sediment storage zone volume, V2 = 193 m3

2 Side slope Z = 2(H) : 1(V)

Depth for sediment storage zone, d1 = 0.3 m (min requirement = 0.3m)

Side Slope, Z = 2

a) Top width, W2 = W1 - 2 x d1/2 x Z = 14.4 m

b) Top length, L2 = L1 - 2 x d1/2 x Z = 20.8 m

3 Required depth of sediment storage zone

V2 = Z2 y23 - Z y22(W2 + L2) + y2(W2L2) = 4 y23 - 70 y22 + 299 y2

Use trial and error to determine depth

For y2 = 0.50 m, V2 = 133 m3

For y2 = 1.00 m, V2 = 233 m3

For y2 = 0.80 m, V2 = 196 m3

(y2 > 0.3m & V2 > 192.5; OK)

c) Overall Basin Dimensions

1 At Top Water Level, WTWL

= W1 + 2 x Z x y1/2 = 17 m

At Top Water Level, LTWL = 23 m

= L1 + 2 x Z x y1/2

2 At Base, WB
= W1 - 2 x Z x( y1/2 + y2 ) = 11 m

At Base, LB
= L1 - 2 x Z x( y1/2 + y2 ) = 17 m

3 Depth
Settling Zone, y1 = 0.6 m

Sediment Storage Zone, y2 = 0.8 m

4 Side Slope Z = 2(H) : 1(V)

D Sizing of outlet pipe (refer Section 39.7.6 (c))

Outlet riser = 300 mm diameter perforated MS pipe

(The pipe is to be provided with sufficient small orifice openings to ensure that the basin will completely drain
within 24 hours after filling)

1 Average surface area, Aav = (17 x 23) + (11 x 17)

2
= 289 m2

2 Orifice size, Do = 45 mm
Cd = 0.6 (use 0.6 for Do < 50 mm, 0.62 for Do >= 50 mm)
Area for each orifice, Ao = 1.60E-03 m2

3 Orifice area, Atotal = 0.003 m2

= 2Aavy1/2 / (tCd(2g)1/2)

4 Total number of orifices required (min) = 0.003 / 0.0016

= 2

At height of increments of 200 mm, starting at the bottom of the pipe, put:
1 rows of 2 x 45 mm (orifices evenly spaced
around the sump)
