Designing a Dry Sediment Basin

TOTAL AREA = 55441.51 SQM

Total area of development = 5.544151 ha
Time of concentration = 20 minutes
Design storm ARI (3 / 6 month) = 3 month

From table 39.5 MESMA

The required surface (m²/ha) = 250 m²/ha

The required volume (m³/ha) = 300 m³/ha

Surface area required for the site = 1386.038 m²

(Note: This is the avg surface area for the settling zone volume)
Total basin volume for the site = 1663.245 m³

a) Settling zone

From Table 39.5, the required settling zone V1 = 831.6227 m³ (half the total volume)
the settling zone depth, y1 = 0.6 m

Try a settling zone average width W1 = 21 m

Required settling zone average length L1 = V1

W1 x y1

= 66.002
L1, say = 67 m

Average surface area = 1407 m² > 1386.038 m² OK!

Check settling dimensions

L1/y1 ratio < 200 = 111.67 OK!

L1/W1 ratio > 2 = 3.190476 OK!

b) Sediment Storage Zone

The required sediment storage zone, V2 = 831.6227 m³

For a side slope Z = 2(H):1(V), the dimensions at the top of the sediment storage zone are,

W2 = W1- (2 x d1/2 x Z)
= 19.8 m

L2 = L1- (2 x d1/2 x Z)
= 65.8 m

The required depth for the sedoment storage zone, which must be at least 0.3 m,
can be calculated from the following relationship

V2 = Z2 y2³ - Zy2² (W2 + L2) + y2 (W2L2)

Using trial and error to find y2 (the minimum value)

For y2 = 0.60 m, V2 = 720.07 m

For y2 = 0.7 m, V2 = 828.30 m
For y2 = 0.8 m, V2 = 933.22 m

As long as y2 > 0.3 and V2 > 831.6227 m OK!

So y2 = 0.8 m

c) Overall Basin Dimensions

At top water level,

WTWL = W1 + 2 x Z x y1/2
= 22.2 m
say = 22 m

LTWL = L1 + 2 x Z x y1/2
= 68.2 m
say = 68 m

At base water level,

WB = W1 - 2 x Z x (y1/2+y2)
= 16.6 m
say = 17 m

LB = L1 - 2 x Z x (y1/2+y2)
= 62.6 m
say = 63 m

Depth: Settling zone, y1 = 0.6 m

Sediment storage zone, y2 = 0.8 m

Side slope Z = 2(H) :(1)V

d) Sizing of outlet pipe

Outlet riser : 600 mm diameter perforated MS pipe/ oil drum

The pipe is provided with sufficient small orifice openings to ensure the basin
will completely drain within 24 hours of filling

An estimate of the total number of orifice openings is obtained by,

(Orifice coefficient, Cd = 0.6)

Average surface area, Aav = (WTWL x LTWL) + (WB x LB)

2

Aav = 1283.5 m²

Orifice area, Atotal = 2Aav √y

tCd√2g

Atotal= 0.013 m²

Using an orifice size of = 50 mm,

The area of the orifice is, Ao = 0.001964 m²

Total number of orifices required = Atotal

Ao

= 6.733963

7 number of 50 mm ø orifices provided evenly around the pipe

e) Sizing of emergency spillway

The emergency spillway must be designed for 10year ARI flood

The sill level must be set to a minimum 300mm above the basin top water level
To simplfy the calculations, followings assumptions are made:

-assume riser pipe flow is orifice flow through the top of pipe only
-riser pipe head is 300mm

Q spillway = Q10 -Qriser

The 10 year ARI rainfall intensity , 10I10 = 116.2 mm/hr

Runoff coefficient = 0.9 (chart 14.4 -vol. 5)

Q10 = C x 10I10 x A
360

= 1.61 m³/s

From Equation 20.2 (MESMA) , assuming orifice discharge coefficient, Co= 0.60

Qriser = CoAo√2gHo

= 0.41 m³/s

Therefore allowing for the riser pipe flow the required spillway capacity is:

Q spillway = Q10 -Qriser

= 1.20 m³/s

From Equation 20.9,

Q spillway = Csp B Hp1.5

From Design Chart 20.2 (MESMA), choose trial dimensions (vol. 7)

B = 5.00 m
Hp = 0.50 m
Csp = 1.58
Q spillway = 2.79 m³/s OK!

Therefore, the total basin depth including the spillway is,

= y1 + y2 + 0.3 + Hp
= 2.20 m
Designing an Below-Ground Storage System

Step (1) : Determine Storage Volume Required

Total Area = 55441.51 m2

Impervious Area (50%) = 27720.76 m2
Pervious Area (50%) = 27720.76 m2

1. Determine times of concentration, tc and tcs

From table 14.3 (Vol.5-MASMA), minimum time of concentration for roof area is;

tc = 5 minutes td (a,b,c,d)= vol. 4, appendix 13.A

tcs = 5 minutes

2. Calculate the pre and post-development flows

2YRS ARI (SETIAWAN PERAK)
a b c d I
td (mins) 5.079 0.3724 -0.1796 0.0081 ln(rIt) (mm/hr)
a b(lnt) c(lnt)2 d(lnt)3 10-yr ARI
30 5.079 1.27 -2.08 0.32 4.59 98.2
60 5.079 1.52 -3.01 0.56 4.15 63.4

from table above.=

2
I30 = 98.2 mm/hr
2
I60 = 63.4 mm/hr

convert to rainfall depth,

2
P30 = 49.1 mm
2
P60 = 63.4 mm

use equation below to determine 2

P5 And Fd = 2.08 (table 13.3 vol. 4- refer figure 13.3)

Pd = P30 - Fd(P60-P30) Equation 13.3 (vol. 4)

2
P5 = 19.4 mm
Therefore
I5 = 116.2 mm/hr
