Factors Affecting Students' Academic Performance Through Online Learning

This study investigates factors affecting Filipino students' academic performance through online learning compared to traditional face-to-face classes. Due to the pandemic, online learning was implemented in the Philippines for students' safety. However, online learning presents challenges such as a lack of devices, stable internet, and learning space. Through surveys and statistical analysis, the study found that while these factors could impact performance, guidance from parents and teachers was still significant. The study recommends addressing challenges to online learning to potentially improve student outcomes.

ABSTRACT

This research aims to investigate the various factors affecting Filipino students’
academic performance through online learning than in traditional face-to-face classes.
As what had experienced in a world nowadays, because of pandemic, face-to-face
classes was not able to resume in Philippines for everyone’s safety and protection.
Thus, online learning was then implemented. However, it made many families
grappling with financial worries on how they able to produce their children the tools
needed for their learning like a device to use, an internet connection and a space to
learn in. Online learning might be inconvenient to many due to various factors but it is
more effective and is certainly better than no classes at all.

INTRODUCTION

Online education is advantageous for students nowadays to continue their

learning without compromising their safety. Although it boasts several advantages
over traditional education, online instruction still has its drawbacks, including limited
communal synergies. It brings forth significant deficiencies than face-to-face mode
such as technical issues, distractions and time management, staying motivated,
understanding course expectations, absence of opportunities of collaborative learning,
teacher supervision and the most glaring being lack of opportunities for hands-on
learning in complex subjects. But still, online learning seems to be significant to be the
path of many students who are taking to continue and secure their education.
Although there were many factors to consider that affects the students’
academic performance through online learning, this study focuses on the most
common challenges that most Filipino students are facing to deal with this new mode
of learning than the traditional face-to-face learning like a device to use, a stable
internet connection and a space to learn wherein not everyone are fortunate to
completely have these.
In essence, learning is a remarkably social process. In truth, it occurs not as a
response to teaching, but rather as a result of a social framework that fosters learning.
To succeed in our struggle to build technology and new media to support learning, we
must move far beyond the traditional view of teaching as delivery of information.
Although information is a critical part of learning, it’s only one among many forces at
work. It’s profoundly misleading and ineffective to separate information, theories, and
principles from the activities and situations within which they are used. Knowledge is
inextricably situated in the physical and social context of its acquisition and use.
It is the objective of this paper to identify those factors that may play significant
role in learning while using online learning tool.

Objectives of the Study

a. To investigate the factors affecting the students’ academic performance

through online learning.
b. To be able to know different techniques or ways for an effective online
education

Origins of Online Education

Computer assisted instruction is changing pedagogical landscape as students’

are currently taking online education due to pandemic. Public and private institutions
are now implementing the efficiencies of web-based education and are rapidly
implementing online classes to meet student needs in terms of their educational
growth.
Contrary to popular belief, online education is not a new phenomenon. The first
correspondence and distance learning educational programs were initiated in the mid
1800’s by the University of London. This model of educational learning was dependent
on the postal service and therefore wasn’t seen in American until the later nineteenth
century. It was in 1873 when what is considered the first official correspondence
educational program was established in Boston, Massachusetts known as the “Society
to Encourage Home Studies.” Since then, non-traditional study has grown into what is
today considered a more viable online instructional modality. Technological
advancement indubitably helped improve the speed and accessibility of distance
learning courses; now students worldwide could attend classes from the comfort of
their own homes and for their own safety.

Qualities of online and traditional Face to Face (F2F) Classroom Education

Online and traditional education share many qualities. Students are still
required to attend class, learn the material, submit assignments, and complete group
projects. While teachers, still have to design curriculums, maximize instructional
quality, answer class questions, motivate students to learn, and grade assignments.
Despite these basic similarities, there are many differences between the two
modalities. Traditionally, classroom instruction is known to be teacher-centered and
requires passive learning by the student, while online instruction is often student-
centered and requires active learning.
The advantages and disadvantages of both instructional modalities need to be
fully fleshed out and examined to truly determine which medium generates better
student performance. Both modalities have been proven to be relatively effective but
the question is, if one is truly better than the other.

Student Need for Online Education

First, prospective students want to be able to receive a quality education without

having to sacrifice work time, family time, travel expense and most importantly the
safety. Instead of having to be at specific location at a specific time, online educational
students have the freedom to communicate with instructors, address classmates,
study materials, and complete assignments from any Internet-accessible point
(Richardson and Swan, 2003).

Second, online education also offers more program choices. With traditional
classroom study, students are forced to take courses only at universities within
feasible driving distance or move. Web-based instruction, on the other hand, grants
students electronic access to multiple universities and course offerings (Salcedo,
2010).

Third, within online teaching, students who usually don’t participate in class may
now voice their opinions and concerns. As they are not in a classroom setting, quieter
students may feel more comfortable partaking in class dialogue without being
recognized or judged. This, in turn, may increase average class scores (Driscoll et al.,
2012).
Literature Review

Irfan Mushtaq & Shabana Nawaz Khan conducted a study that deals with
various factors affecting students’ academic performance. In which, communication,
learning facilities, proper guidance, family stress could really affect both positively and
negatively in student’s performance. Communication and proper guidance plays a
positive factor in terms of an effective students’ performance. It is possible to see
communication as a variable which may be positively related to performance of the
student in open learning. A major distinction of this study from previous studies is that
it focuses on open learning (Abdullah AL-Mutairi, 2011). The students also faced a lot
of problems in developing positive study attitudes and study habits. Guidance is of the
factor through which student can improve his study attitudes and study habits and is
directly proportional to academic achievement.

Methodology

Through various research that was performed and conducted, the following
methods are utilized.
a. Measure
The extent of existence for all variables in the research area was measured
on a five-point Likert scale ranging form, strongly disagree to strongly
disagree
b. Data Set
The source of data is primarily through questionnaires that were distributed.
c. Statistical Tools
Mean, Standard deviation, correlation and regression analysis are used
through appropriate statistical package.
Results and Conclusion
Findings of the study are discussed below;
a. Data Analysis and Discussion
In order to meet the purpose of the study, this section has five parts for
analyzing the data collected for the study. The five parts are: (a)data sample
information, (b)descriptive analysis, (c)correlation analysis, (d) regression
analysis and hypothesis testing.

Recommendations

This study shows that despite of lack of learning tools, people still find ways to
provide what is must for their students learning. Device to be used, internet connection
and a space to learn in which expects to be a major factor that could affect students’
performance through online learning but in contrary, still the guidance of parents and
also by their teacher play a significant role so that students could perform well. Also,
students’ performance should be improved if the students have good and effective
communication skills and have good competence in English. Overall, there are wide
considerations affecting students’ performance. If we look deeply into it, those factors
can be addressed and the result might be of a great difference.
