ABSTRACT
This research aims to investigate the various factors affecting Filipino students’
academic performance through online learning than in traditional face-to-face classes.
As what had experienced in a world nowadays, because of pandemic, face-to-face
classes was not able to resume in Philippines for everyone’s safety and protection.
Thus, online learning was then implemented. However, it made many families
grappling with financial worries on how they able to produce their children the tools
needed for their learning like a device to use, an internet connection and a space to
learn in. Online learning might be inconvenient to many due to various factors but it is
more effective and is certainly better than no classes at all.
INTRODUCTION
Online and traditional education share many qualities. Students are still
required to attend class, learn the material, submit assignments, and complete group
projects. While teachers, still have to design curriculums, maximize instructional
quality, answer class questions, motivate students to learn, and grade assignments.
Despite these basic similarities, there are many differences between the two
modalities. Traditionally, classroom instruction is known to be teacher-centered and
requires passive learning by the student, while online instruction is often student-
centered and requires active learning.
The advantages and disadvantages of both instructional modalities need to be
fully fleshed out and examined to truly determine which medium generates better
student performance. Both modalities have been proven to be relatively effective but
the question is, if one is truly better than the other.
Second, online education also offers more program choices. With traditional
classroom study, students are forced to take courses only at universities within
feasible driving distance or move. Web-based instruction, on the other hand, grants
students electronic access to multiple universities and course offerings (Salcedo,
2010).
Third, within online teaching, students who usually don’t participate in class may
now voice their opinions and concerns. As they are not in a classroom setting, quieter
students may feel more comfortable partaking in class dialogue without being
recognized or judged. This, in turn, may increase average class scores (Driscoll et al.,
2012).
Literature Review
Irfan Mushtaq & Shabana Nawaz Khan conducted a study that deals with
various factors affecting students’ academic performance. In which, communication,
learning facilities, proper guidance, family stress could really affect both positively and
negatively in student’s performance. Communication and proper guidance plays a
positive factor in terms of an effective students’ performance. It is possible to see
communication as a variable which may be positively related to performance of the
student in open learning. A major distinction of this study from previous studies is that
it focuses on open learning (Abdullah AL-Mutairi, 2011). The students also faced a lot
of problems in developing positive study attitudes and study habits. Guidance is of the
factor through which student can improve his study attitudes and study habits and is
directly proportional to academic achievement.
Methodology
Through various research that was performed and conducted, the following
methods are utilized.
a. Measure
The extent of existence for all variables in the research area was measured
on a five-point Likert scale ranging form, strongly disagree to strongly
disagree
b. Data Set
The source of data is primarily through questionnaires that were distributed.
c. Statistical Tools
Mean, Standard deviation, correlation and regression analysis are used
through appropriate statistical package.
Results and Conclusion
Findings of the study are discussed below;
a. Data Analysis and Discussion
In order to meet the purpose of the study, this section has five parts for
analyzing the data collected for the study. The five parts are: (a)data sample
information, (b)descriptive analysis, (c)correlation analysis, (d) regression
analysis and hypothesis testing.
Following tables shows the result of the gathered data ;
Recommendations
This study shows that despite of lack of learning tools, people still find ways to
provide what is must for their students learning. Device to be used, internet connection
and a space to learn in which expects to be a major factor that could affect students’
performance through online learning but in contrary, still the guidance of parents and
also by their teacher play a significant role so that students could perform well. Also,
students’ performance should be improved if the students have good and effective
communication skills and have good competence in English. Overall, there are wide
considerations affecting students’ performance. If we look deeply into it, those factors
can be addressed and the result might be of a great difference.
