Many teachers and instructors agree that the process of student learning remains invincible to
them, and only see the tip of the student’s learning process (performance on assessments or
tests). They usually do not have a good grasp of how students approach learning tasks, where
they struggle, and what kind of strategies they use to learn. The new learning setup challenged
educators on reaching out to their students since they can only contact and interact with them
online. However, this gives them the new opportunity to innovate strategies and techniques to
improve the learning experience of their students.
According to Ambrose (2013), learning is an important “process that leads to change, which
occurs as a result of experience and increases the potential for improved performance and future
learning.” The learning experience/ process has a vital role in developing knowledge, skills, and
attitude of the students. That is the reason why we must commit to making changes and
adjustments as we go on the journey of learning to achieve a better quality education and
learning experience. To do that, we must identify first what are the issues, challenges, and
problems faced by senior high school students today.
Our purpose is to help educators provide a better learning experience to students by identifying
the issues students face while studying and to help students address non-school-related problems
to improve their learning experience.
The focus of this survey report is the challenges faced by ABM students today. Our goal is to
identify and address the struggles and challenges ABM students are facing today by knowing
their perception and opinions on strand-related challenges and non-strand/ school-related
challenges. The views of respondents will be used to identify the areas that need improvement
for better quality education and learning process.
II. Methodology
This survey report used an online survey tool to obtain information from ABM students on their
experiences and challenges they face today and its results. This was preferred to offline
alternatives (e.g. paper or face-to-face survey) due to its cost advantage, faster data handling, and
safer method of reaching the respondents.
The survey was designed using Google Forms, an online survey tool frequently used to design
and conduct survey research and market evaluations. The survey contained questions dealing
with user profiles (gender, age, learning delivery mode, strand), questions about the
strand-related challenges they are experiencing, and non-strand/school-related issues they are
experiencing while learning.
With a target of 20 ABM students as our sample size, we use the random sampling technique in
our quantitative research. Using the random sampling technique ensures the researchers that the
result obtained from our sample should approximate the results obtained if the entire population
had been measured since it gives all sampling units in the population an equal chance of being
selected.
Prior to conducting the survey, it was reviewed by the researchers to gain feedback on its length,
clarity and order of questions, and the suitability of response categories. The final
survey—which took approximately 5 min to complete—was distributed online to 40 students of
ABM. The students were contacted by message using messenger on the weekend of the first
week of February with details on who was conducting the survey, its purpose, and a direct link to
the online survey. This was followed up with a reminder on the next day in an attempt to increase
the response rate, and reduce the possibility of non-response bias. The survey was only provided
in English. Overall, 21 respondents fully completed the survey and one of them is a STEM
student; hence, to get the accurate target population of the survey, his results were excluded.
Finally, the target sample is obtained by the 20 respondents who completed the survey.
III. Results
Among the 20 respondents, only 10% or 2 students strongly agree/ agree that the specialized
subjects (Business Math, Organization and Business Management) are so advanced that they
cannot keep up, and 40% or 8 students strongly disagree/ disagree with it. For 45% or 9 students,
they completely understood how to work with the mathematical formulas related to their strand,
while 20% or 4 of them strongly disagreed/ disagreed. Also, 65% or 13 of them have developed
analytical thinking and critical thinking skills, while 10% of them strongly disagree/ disagree.
Moreover, 60% or 12 students have understood the basic concepts of the ABM Strand: Financial
Management, Business Management, Corporate Operations because of the effective method of
teaching by the teachers, and 10% or 2 of them strongly disagree/ disagree with it. In addition,
40% or 8 students strongly agree/ agree that they are struggling to meet the expectations of
everyone as an ABM Student wherein they were expected to be good in math and balancing all
the work and studies, and 30% or 6 of them strongly disagree/ disagree with it. Lastly, 25% or 5
students strongly agree/ agree that they are struggling today because they lack enough
knowledge about Accountancy, Business and Management before the classes started, and 40% or
8 of them strongly disagree/ disagree with it.

Among the 20 respondents, 60% or 12 students strongly agree/ agree that the given deadlines for
the assignment, projects, and assessments are not enough to finish on time, and 20% or 4
students strongly disagree/ disagree with it. For 60% or 12 students strongly agree/ agree that
external distractions such as background noise and visual noise affect their academic
performance, while 20% or 4 of them strongly disagree/ disagree. In addition, 45% or 9 students
strongly agree/ agree that they have terrible management which greatly affected my academic
performance, and 30% or 6 of them strongly disagree/ disagree with it. Lastly, 65% or 13
students strongly agree/ agree that the speed of an internet connection is essential for their
learning, while 15% or 3 of them strongly disagree/ disagree with it.
