Introduction

Today we’re going to start our unit on a very unique type of writing.
Before we jump into it I want to read to you a book that highlights the
10 min type of writing we’ll be working on over the next few weeks.

I want you to listen closely and see what types of the things you notice
about the author’s writing.

Read: Stella Writes an Opinion (Mini Lesson)

- Have students think about what made Stella’s speech
convincing.
Activity 1:

Let’s work to form some opinions of your own – take a few minutes to
write down all the opinions that you have! Some examples of opinions
that you might have are on the board.
10 min - Opinions could be: best pet, food, colour, sport, season, school
subject, etc.

- Share 1 opinion with the class – this is the topic you are going to discussion
write about today! about being
kind with
difference of
opinions prior
to sharing.
Activity 2:

Now that we have picked our topic – what is the next thing we need to
do? We need to come up with reasons for WHY we think what we do. *Writing should
10-15 min An easy way to remember this is to remember OREO! follow “OREO”
format
The Components of a Persuasive Speech:
In order to write a convincing speech, we need to include a few key
things think OREO:
- O: Opinion – we need to state clearly what our opinion is.
- R: Reasons – we need to give the audience reasons to believe
what we are saying, why do we think the way we do.
- E: Examples – we need to provide specific examples to our
reader (between 2-3 minimum)
- O: Opinion – wrap up what we are saying, remind readers of
our opinion.

On the next page I want you to write your opinion at the top and them
write down 2-3 reasons why you think what you think. Make sure you
can explain your reason like Stella did.

Activity 3:

Now that we have our reasons let’s look at how our writing should be
organized.
20-30 min - First, we need to introduce our topic and state our opinion. This
is the introduction.
- Second, we need to explain the reasons behind our opinion. This
is where we add all the details to make others believe our
opinion.
- Lastly, we need to wrap-up our writing by stating our opinion
again.

Students free-write:
- Using the prompt and ideas generated by the class, students will
write their own personal speeches about a topic of their
choosing.
- Check-in with students to see that they are using proper writing
format
- If students finish early, encourage them to re-read their work
checking for spelling mistakes
o Students may also consider thinking of other opinions
they have that they may like to write about.
