Introduction
Fourths Tuning, or P4 Tuning as it’s also known, is a symmetrical tuning in the sense that the
interval between each string on the guitar is a perfect fourth as oppose to standard tuning where
there is a major third between the G and B strings. Fourths Tuning therefore provides a
symmetrical answer to overcoming the lack of symmetry in standard tuning, and its main
advantages are a huge reduction in the amount of patterns to be learned for chord shapes, scales
and arpeggios, which are visually consistent all over the neck.

Fourths tuning has been around for a long time, but has gained in popularity over the last decade
or so with younger players exploring the tuning and its possibilities, especially in the field of jazz
and fusion music where easy access to numerous scales and chords is fundamental.

All fretboard diagrams in this eBook are presented in F, and feature intervals as oppose to
note names so that you can easily transpose any chord shape, arpeggio or scale to any
other key.

Chords and Arpeggios

Rather than having endless chord boxes, we have included fretboard diagrams which show all the
intervals of a particular chord up to the 12th fret. Use these diagrams to find chord shapes which
are comfortable for you, and to explore all possible permutations of a chord on the fretboard;
these diagrams can also be used to derive and explore arpeggios. Optional notes are in gray, and
in the next chapter there are blank chord boxes to record any chords you find.

Scales
Scales are presented in the same format as chords and arpeggios as with All Fourths Tuning there
is no established set of CAGED or 3NPS patterns as in standard tuning. Use the following
diagrams to come up with your own patterns which are comfortable for you. All scales are shown
in F up to the 12th fret with the intervals marked. To transpose any scale to another key, simply
relocate the root note (1).
