Basal Body Temperature

This document provides information about several natural family planning methods, including basal body temperature (BBT) tracking, the mucus method, and the standard days method. It describes how each method works, how to chart readings, determine fertile windows, and use the methods to either achieve or prevent pregnancy. Key details covered include taking basal temperature after sleeping, observing cervical mucus changes, abstaining from intercourse during fertile days 8-19 for the standard days method.

Basal Body Temperature (BBT)

- Is the temperature of rest after at least 3 hours of continuous sleep.

- Is based on the woman’s menstrual cycle.
- Entails daily taking and recording of the woman’s temperature after 3 hours of continuous
sleep.
- An ovulation thermometer is used.

*note: There is a shift in the woman’s body temperature during the ovulation period.

How do you know when is the fertile day?

 The cover line is the point of reference for determining the thermal shift that occurs during
ovulation.

Determining the cover line:

1. Identify the temperature reading of the first 10 days of the cycle.

2. Disregard the temperature for the first 5 days.
3. Find the highest temperature from days 6-10, disregard any temperature that is abnormally
high due to illness.
4. Draw a horizontal line across the chart on the highest of the temperature from days 6 to 10.
This is the cover line.
5. Watch for three consecutive temperature recordings above the cover line. It indicates that
ovulation has taken place.

*note: The first day of the menstrual cycle until the second day of the thermal shift are
considered fertile.

To postpone pregnancy:

- Intercourse is allowed from the 3rd day of the thermal shift until the end of cycle.

Mucus Method (MM)

- Is based on the daily observation of what a woman sees and feels at the vaginal area
throughout the day.
- Cervical mucus changes indicate whether days are fertile or not and can be used to avoid or
achieve pregnancy.
Two skills in the use of Mucus:

 Observing the mucus

 Reading the mucus

Observing the mucus:

Who: women

What: what you feel (dry or wet)

what you see (mucus)

Where: around the vaginal area

When: everyday from first day of menstruation

throughout the day

before or after urinating

*note (if you feel wet or dry around the vaginal area):

 See if there is mucus in the underwear

 Pass the tissue around the vaginal area to check for mucus.

Recording mucus observation:

Who: couples

What: what woman feels

what woman sees

Where: On mucus method chart

End of day, before going to bed

When: end of day, before going to bed

How: write what you feel

write what you see

use chart symbols

Chart Symbols

R= regal or menstruation; spotting

D= dry, no mucus

X= wet with slippery, stretchy, clear, or wet mucus

X
== = peak day, last day of wetness or wet mucus

M = dry w/ sticky, pasty or crumbly, mucus

1,2,3= post peak days

= lovemaking day

Sympto Thermal Method

- Combination of BBT & ovulation method/ mucus method

Lactational Amenorrhea Method (LAM)

When can a woman use LAM:

 Her baby is fully or nearly fully breastfed (every 4 hours during the day and every 6
hours at night)
 Her menstrual priod has not returned yet.
 Her baby is less than 6 months old.

Mucus method from breastfeeding/ LAM interface:

 Used when any of the conditions for LAM is not applicable

 Determine Basic Infertile Pattern (BIP) for 2 weeks (abstain)
 Apply EDR

Standard Days Method (SDM)

Fertile window of days 8-19

How it works:

1. For women with cycle of 26-32 days

2. Days 8-19 is the fertile window
3. This 12 day fertile window includes:
 Life span of the sperm cell
 Ovulation time
 Life span of the egg cell
 Six-day variation in the cycle range

Who can use this method?

1. All woman with 26-32 ages

2. Women shifting from pills who have had 2 cycles after stopping the pills which are within
26-32 days.
3. Women shifting from injectables who had their last injection 65 months ago and the last
2 cycles are within 26-32 days.
4. Breast feeding in women who have had 3 cycles since menses returned and the last
cycle is within 26-32 days.

Advantages

1. With the SDM

 No counting
 No charting
 No calculations

*note: Beads are used for tracking fertile and infertile days of the cycle.

Mode of use of SDM

 The cycle beads represent the menstrual cycle of the woman.

 The Green beads represent the days when the woman can get pregnant (fertile)
 The Beige beads represent the days when the woman can’t become pregnant.
 The Black bead determines if the woman is within the required cycle range.
