ACTIVITY 1
Answer the following questions. (70 points)
1. Why is it important to study history?
The past causes the present, and so the future. We live in the present. We plan for and
worry about the future. History, however, is the study of the past. So, given all the demands of
life happening in front of us and anticipating what these things have to become, why bother
understanding what has been? Well maybe because it is where it all started and beginnings are
inescapable.
History has been always part of education. As a student, we need to know our very
beginning, our history, may it be environmental, legal, political or personal. We need to know
these things for us to understand what has happened before that had led us to such
challenges, and eventually finding solutions for these issues. We students plan to become
professionals someday, and learning history will greatly help us in every decision to make a
better future, a better planet for everyone.
Furthermore, making a better planet for the next generation is the very reason why we
exist as a citizen of a certain society. We work, help and inspire people because we want
development. We want progress. Indeed, we always want some changes, it is because of the
past, the history. History taught us to make better decisions not just for ourselves but for our
countrymen. It is necessary to study history because it serves as a collection of data from the
past that serves us vital evidence in figuring out complex behaviors in society. We owe our
learnings, strategies, and improvements from the past.
Thus, only through studying history can we grasp how things change; only through
history can we begin to comprehend the factors that cause change; and only through history
can we understand what elements of an institution or a society persist despite change. We first
became students to find solutions. We became part of the society to make progress. As a
historian, we still need to study history for us to write our own. Our ways on how we
constructed our lives involves a sense of beauty and excitement, and thus helps us to have
another perspective on human life and society.

4. Why is it important to use and understand primary sources in studying different historical
periods?
Primary sources are valuable to historians because they give insight into the ways in
which historical figures understood or internalized what they experienced, their place or
significance in history, and give historians an understanding of historical figures’ opinions.
Primary sources created by institutions, such as a census or survey, can help document basic
statistics concerning an era. Primary sources are clues from the past.
5. How should the historian or the student of history look at primary sources?
The historian or the student should have the ability to think, reflect, debate, discuss and
evaluate the past, formulating and refining questions and lines of enquiry. They must also have an
excellent knowledge and understanding of people, events, and contexts from a range of historical
periods and of historical concepts and processes. Most importantly, they must be passionate in history
and an enthusiastic engagement in learning, which develops their sense of curiosity about the past and
their understanding of how and why people interpret the past in different ways.
