Student Manual of Torsional Vibration Apparatus
Introduction: -
Torsional vibration is angular vibration of an object commonly a shaft along its axis of rotation. Torsional vibration is
often a concern in power transmission systems using rotating shafts or couplings where it can cause failures if not
controlled. In ideal power transmission system using rotating parts the torque applied or reacted are “smooth” leading to
constant speeds. In reality this is not the case. The torques generated may not be smooth (e.g., internal combustion
engines) or the component being
Objective:-
Determine of the period of torsional vibration as a function of:
Apparatus:-
Formula Use:-
Moment of inertia:
G= Modulus of rigidity (N/ )(for S.S 304 its value is 70.3 Gpa)
L= Length of Shaft(m)
1
Polar moment of inertia:
d=Diameter of shaft
Procedure:-
1. Fix the bracket at convenient position along the beam as shown in figure.
2. Grip the shaft at the bracket by means of chuck and tighten it with key.
3. Fix the rotor on the other end of the shaft.
4. Note down the length of shaft with a measuring tape.
5. Twist the rotor through some angle and release.
6. Note down the time required for 50 oscillations with a stop watch.
7. Repeat the procedure for 5 times and take average value to avoid error.
