Information on Competition
I chose to work towards submitting my music video to “Film Pride Brighton and Hove Film
festival.” This specific festival has been running for three years now but is a part of the much
more well-known “Brighton Pride.” Which is one of the biggest pride events in the world.
Last year the festival took place for just under two weeks and brought their audiences
almost 60 LGBTQ+ short films, documentaries, animations, and feature films. Additionally,
they did Q&As with some of the filmmakers.
They screened a selection of the films in a series of television on Brighton and Hove’s local
TV channel, Latest TV Brighton, and on 13 local television channels throughout the UK. This
was a highly successful addition to the festival and gave the selected filmmakers an
opportunity to have their works seen by thousands more.

As I am creating a music video, I will be entering the “Short Film” category, due to the timing
of this unit, I would have just started filming in April (see production schedule) and
therefore will have to submit for the “Late Deadline” this will cost just under £30.
Film Pride don’t have any submission rules only that if the piece is non-English speaking,
there is English subtitles. As well as all filming produced must be entirely your own.

Winning
There is no physical “prize” for being selected, if you win then your production will be
shown at the festival and on the local TV channels if you so wish. This is essentially exactly
what I was looking for when coming up with an idea. I want to create a piece that has an
impact and power, something that can help teach and open eyes. If I won and my piece got
selected to be shown at the festival, then the more coverage it could get would be the
perfect prize, not only to share the very important message but also to help get my name
out there.
I feel like I have potential to win this competition because my narrative fits in perfectly with
the genre of this festival, pride. My aims for this piece were to focus on LGBTQ+ youth and
show the reality of this rather that what majority of the mainstream media make it out to
be. I think that a competition that is focussing purely on LGBTQ+ coverage means that I have
a great chance. Its about spreading this awareness and a festival that specialises in the
community is going to be able to pick on up that and can potentially use it to their
advantage.
My Idea
I knew from the very start I wanted to make my FMP to do with LGBTQ+ youth, it was
important to me that I could find a song that would also help with this representation. My
initial three ideas were all based off of songs with queer undertones or by queer artists.
With these three ideas, I carried out a survey where I asked people what their opinions were
on them and asked for some simple feedback purely on the narrative I came up with and
didn’t mention the songs so there was no bias, this survey played a huge role in helping me
decide what my final idea would be, the narrative that was the most popular was one that I
had thought of doing to “Hope for the underrated youth” by Yungblud who is a queer artist
himself and has made his fanbase such a welcoming and safe place for people all
throughout the community. The more I thought about the idea I had with the song, the
more I realised it was a perfect fit, the title itself is about the underrated youth and how
there is hope out there, essentially this is exactly what I am aiming to get across with my
piece. I developed this idea further by listen to the song and deciphering what it meant to
me and how I could interpret this into a narrative and cinematography.
Outline: a music video showing there is always hope for people who feel lost and educating
outsiders on the issues still being faced.

“Hope For The Underrated Youth”
Music video/Film production
In detail my idea:
A music video with short narrative before and after. Beginning narrative showing just how
hard it is being stuck in an environment that is unaccepting and how harmful this could be,
the music video itself being about finding this escape and coming to the realisation that
there is hope and the ending narrative being acceptance within oneself and realising that
even though some people don’t accept you, there will always be people that do.
Another reason I feel this needs to be made is because of the sheer lack of genuine LGBTQ+
representation there is out there. The only way to normalise something like this is going to
be through media coverage but coverage in a way that is true to the community, not done
by artists that aren’t apart of it and haven’t experienced it first hand because its not their
story to tell. This is particularly important because from a lot of LGBTQ+ critically acclaimed
films such “Love Simon” these are made by cishet people usually with cishet actors which
doesn’t allow queer people that space and platform to actually represent our community to
the world. Its once again taking away the voice of someone in a minority group whilst
simultaneously trying to show support when really just being in it for the profit. This isn’t
how queer stories should be told and I want to be a part of the change in this.

Target Audience
Although I think that my production will be beneficial for anyone and everyone to see,
specifically I would say it is targeted to the younger generation. To have young people
(youth) see this and know that it is okay to be who they are and show them that no matter
the circumstances they find themselves in, there will always be hope, I think would be
extremely beneficial and spread a highly positive message. I also want an audience of
people from outside of the community to see it, realise and understand the struggles that a
lot of people go through on a daily basis just for being authentically them.
I think that my aimed demographic would be 12–25-year-olds. (Generation Z)
