Recreate the Network diagram for this project and note how MS Project uses nodes to
identify activity durations, start and finish dates, and predecessors. What is the critical
path for this network diagram? How do we know?

A – Survey site 5 days _
B – Install sewer and storm drainage 9 days A
C – Install gas and electric power lines 4 days A
D – Excavate site for spec house 2 days B, C
E – Pour foundation 2 days D

In the above diagram, we can identify two separate paths labeled:

Path one: A –B –D –E = 18 weeks and Path two: A –C –D –E = 13 weeks

The first path which links the activities A –B –D –E, is scheduled for duration of 18 weeks.
Therefore, it is the critical path since the slack time in this path is ZERO and it has no float, or
slack time associated with it.
