CHE 509 - Size Reduction (Problems)

This document contains 7 problems related to size reduction and crushing operations: 1) Determine the sphericity of a cube and ideal cylinder. 2) Calculate the power consumption to crush rock from 0.069m to 4x10^-3m at a rate of 9,000 kg/h. 3) Calculate the power consumption to crush particles from 25x10^-4m to 1x10^-4m at a rate of 10 tons/h. 4) Calculate the energy consumption to crush material from 75mm to 25mm assuming Kick's law. 5) Calculate various size distribution parameters for crushed quartz between 4-mesh and 200-mesh.

Lesson 2: Size Reduction

(Problems)

Determine the sphericity of the following:

A. Cube
B. Ideal cylinder

An available crusher has been accepting hard rock with a volume surface
mean diameter of 0.069 m and providing a product with a mean diameter
of 5x10^-3 m. The power required for crushing 10,000 kg/h of this
specified rock is 6.35 kW. Assume that the mechanical efficiency of the
unit will remain unchanged. The power consumption if the capacity were
reduced to 9000 kg/h with the same feed characteristics but with a
reduction in the volume surface mean diameter of the product to 4x10^-3
is____.

Particles of an average size of 25x10^-4 m are crushed to an average

product size of 5x10^-4 at the rate of 15 tons/hr. At this rate, the crusher
consumes 32 kW of power of which 2 kW are required for running the
mill empty. What would be the power consumption of 10 tons/hr of this
product to further crush to 1x10^-4 m size in the same mill? Assume
Rittinger’s law is applicable.

A material is crushed in a black jaw crusher and the particles are

reduced from 50 mm to 10 mm with consumption of energy at the rate of
13 kW/(kg/s). The consumption of energy needed to crush the same
material of an average size of 75 mm to an average size of 25 mm,
assuming Kick’s law applies, is ____.

The screen analysis shown applies to a sample of crushed quartz. The

density of the particles is 2650 kg/m^3 (0.00265 g/mm^3) and the shape
factors are a=2 and ø=0.571. For the material between 4-mesh and 200-
mesh in particle size, calculate
A. Aw in mm^2/g
B. Nw in particles/g
C. Dv
D. Ds
E. Dw
F. Ni for 150/200-mesh increment
G. Xi for 150/200-mesh increment
