Lemery Colleges: Activity No. 1 The Golden Ratio

The document describes a mathematics activity where students measure parts of their body and calculate ratios between the measurements. They measure distances from the ground to their belly button, belly button to head, and ground to knees. They also measure hand length and wrist to elbow distance. Students then calculate 5 ratios between the measurements and record the results in a table. They are asked to observe if anything is special about the ratios.

Activity No. 1
The Golden Ratio

Measure the following:

 Distance from the ground to your belly button
 Distance from your belly button to the top of your head
 Distance from the ground to your knees
 Distance A, B, C
 Length of your hand
 Distance from your wrist to your elbow

Now calculate the following ratios:

1. Distance from the ground to your belly button / Distance from your belly button to the top of your head
2. Distance from the ground to your belly button / Distance from the ground to your knees
3. Distance C / Distance B
4. Distance B / Distance A
5. Distance from your wrist to your elbow / Length of your hand

Write all your result on the following table:

Ratio 1 Ratio 2 Ratio 3 Ratio 4 Ratio 5

Can you see anything special about these ratios? Explain your observation.
