Performance Tasks in Science 9 M1&2

The document provides instructions for students to complete performance tasks in Science focusing on atoms, chemical compounds, and the physical properties of ionic and covalent bonds. Students are asked to draw an atom with 3 energy levels and label the parts. They are also given a fold-a-ball activity where they take cardboard circles, write different physical properties on each one, fold them, and glue them together to form a ball. The physical properties to be addressed are melting point, hardness, polarity, and thermal and electrical conductivity.

PERFORMANCE TASKS IN SCIENCE 9

FOR MODULE 1 & 2:

A. The electrons of the atom determine how it reacts with other atom to form important chemical compounds like the molecules of water ( H շO ) which is important in all
living things. As a learner understanding the organization of electrons around the nucleus of the atom can help you more understand our material world. Using what you
have learned, draw the atom with 3 energy levels and name the parts of it. Use separate sheet of paper for your answer.
B. Always remember the Physical Properties of compounds:
1. Melting point
2. Hardness
3. Polarity
4. Thermal and Electrical Conductivity

Fold-a-Ball
This activity further aims to:
1. Enhance your understanding of the physical properties of ionic and covalent compounds such as Hardness, Melting Point, Polarity and Thermal and
electrical conductivity.

You need to have the following materials for this activity.

-5 pieces same-sized cardboards Ruler
-Coloring materials Glue or Stapler
- Pair of scissors Pencil and pen

Here’s how:

1. Get the cardboards and draw 3 x 3 inches height circle and cut it all around. You now have circular boards.
2. At the upper central part of the first cardboard, write the “Physical Property: Melting Point”. Now, fold the board in half. On the left side, write the characteristics of
ionic compound based on melting point and on the other side, write the characteristic of the covalent compound based on its melting point. You can draw or add
images and graphics on each side.
3. Do the same with the other characteristics- Hardness, Polarity and Thermal and electrical Conductivity.

4. After all the boards were folded, glue all the central folds of each board to form a round ball.

5. Output will be assessed in accordance with the following rubric.
