Module 9 - Motions of Physics - Study Guide

This document outlines a 10-day lesson plan on motions in physics. Over the course of the lessons, students will learn about key concepts like position, distance, displacement, speed, velocity, acceleration, and formulas relating these concepts. They will watch explanatory videos and complete practice problems and assessments. The lessons introduce core ideas like the difference between scalar and vector quantities as well as the formulas for distance, velocity, acceleration, and equations involving acceleration due to gravity.

Module 9
Motions of Physics

Day 1: Monday (March 1st)

Read pp.202-206
 Physics is a ______________ science

 Mechanics involves three things: ______________, ______________, ______________

 position

 reference point

 Know: “all motion is relative”

Watch: Distance and Displacement (website)

 distance and displacement (see picture below; ask me if you have questions)

 Notice that you must have units for distance. You cannot just say 3. You have to say, for
instance 3 meters. The unit for distance/displacement in standard physics is the meter
(m).

 distance/displacement = final position – initial position or

 d = pf – pi

 OYO 9.1

DAY 2: Tuesday (March 2nd)

Read pp.206-208
 Review ideas from Day 1 (position, reference point, relative motion)

 speed
1
Physical Science nombre: ______________
Señor Kotynski la fecha: ______________
o formula: speed = distance/time or

o s = d/t

 Study examples on pp.207-208

 OYO 9.2-9.3

DAY 3: Wednesday (March 3rd)

Read pp.208-212
 Review ideas from Days 1-2 (position, distance, speed)

 velocity

o formula: velocity = displacement/time or

o v = d/t

o Notice that if displacement is measured in meters (m) and time in seconds (s) that

the unit for velocity is m/s (meters per second)

o (notice that usually we don’t distinguish between distance and displacment in our
variable, but technically displacement and distance are different)

Watch: Speed and Velocity (website)

 What is the difference betwen velocity and speed?

 scalar quantity (basically a scalar tells you scale/size, like an absolute value in math)
o distance
o speed

 vector quantity (a vector tells you size and direction)

o displacement
o velocity

 Have dad explain velocity vs. speed using a graph

 Experiment 9.1 (pp.209-210)

 Read example 9.2 carefully

 OYO 9.4

2
Physical Science nombre: ______________
Señor Kotynski la fecha: ______________
 OYO 9.5

DAY 4: Thursday (March 4th)

 Review previous concepts (speed vs. velocity)

 acceleration can refer to change in speed or change in velocity (scalar or vector)

o for physics, we will refer to acceleration as a vector quantity: change in velocity

o formula: acceleration = change-in-velocity/time or

o a = Δv/t (Δv is ‘change in velocity’ or vf-vi (final velocity minus initial velocity))

 so a = (vf-vi)/t

o Notice that since v = d/t and a = Δv/t, a = Δd/t2

o If distance is in meters (m) and time is in seconds (s), we get a unit of m/s2 for
acceleration (meters per second squared)

 Go over examples carefully.

 OYO 9.6

 OYO 9.7

 OYO 9.8

DAY 5: Friday (March 5th)

Watch: Speed, Velocity and Acceleration (website)
Read pp.218-224
 Review concepts (speed, velocity, acceleration)

 gravity (see figure 9.4)

 Why do we associate gravity with acceleration?

 Discuss with dad why change in direction, not just change in speed, is considered

acceleration (discuss how you feel when you turn a corner fast in a car; use a graph to

help)

 Experiment 9.2

3
Physical Science nombre: ______________
Señor Kotynski la fecha: ______________
 air resistance

 If you have an acceleration (i.e. a change in velocity), like gravity, and you want to find

out how far you’ve gone (distance), the formula is:

o distance = initial-velocity x time + half of acceleration x time or

o d = vit + ½at

o (have dad explain why this is true and do some sample problems involving

gravity)

 OYO 9.9

 OYO 9.10

DAY 6: Monday (March 8th)

Review concepts: (distance, speed; displacement, velocity, acceleration)
 Complete Study Guide for Module #9 (pp.227-228)

DAY 7: Tuesday (March 9th)

 Study and memorize the following formulas, be able to explain what they mean, and be
able to apply in a word problem (see OYO and your study guide for practice problems)
o d = p f - pi
o v = d/t
o a = v/t
o d = vit + ½at
 Know that the acceleration due to gravity (g) is 9.8 s/m2

DAY 8: Wednesday (March 10th)

 Continue to learn your formulas
 Ask dad for practice problems.

DAY 9: Thursday (March 11th)

 Continue to learn your formulas
 Ask dad for practice problems.

DAY 10: Friday (March 12th)

 Module 9 quiz
 know your formula and be able to explain and apply them
