1 Fuel Cell
A fuel cell vehicle (FCV) or fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) is an electric vehicle that uses a fuel cell,
sometimes in combination with a small battery or supercapacitor, to power its onboard electric motor.
Fuel cells in vehicles generate electricity generally using oxygen from the air and compressed hydrogen.
Most fuel cell vehicles are classified as zero-emissions vehicles that emit only water and heat. As
compared with internal combustion vehicles, hydrogen vehicles centralize pollutants at the site of
the hydrogen production, where hydrogen is typically derived from reformed natural gas. Transporting
and storing hydrogen may also create pollutants.
Fuel cells could be power generators with a higher efficiency than any system produced so far, and cells
could dramatically reduce urban air pollution and decrease the consumption of oil, natural gas, and coal.
In addition, fuel cells running on hydrogen derived from a renewable source will produce nothing
but water vapor. The future of fuel cells is promising, but there still remain several obstacles to bringing
them into practical use. Eventually, fuel cells will be used as not only stationary power plants, but also as
electrochemical engines for vehicles, power plants for homes, and batteries in portable electronics by
down-sizing.
2 Constructions
A fuel cell may be defined as a device that converts chemical energy from a fuel into electricity through a
chemical reaction. The chemical reaction occurs in the presence of oxygen or an oxidizing agent.

Hydrogen fuel cells are cells that contain hydrogen as the fuel. Hydrogen fuel is a zero emission fuel that
releases energy during combustion or through electrochemical reactions. Fuel cells and batteries produce
an electric current through a chemical reaction, but a fuel cell will produce energy as long as there is fuel,
thus never losing its charge.
