Brief Introduction
This activity is about addition of simple fractions and mixed numbers. This lesson is a
great help to solve real-life word problems that involve fractions.
Objectives:
1. Add simple fractions without or with regrouping.
2. Add mixed numbers without or with regrouping.
A. Let’s Recall
Find the least common denominator (LCD) of the following pairs of fractions and
make them similar fractions. The first one is done for you.
B. Let’s Understand
3
A fraction like says we have 3 out of the 4 parts of the whole is divided into.
4
C. Let’s Explain
Steps in adding simple fractions and mixed numbers
1. Convert dissimilar fractions into similar fractions.
2. Add the whole numbers and the fractional parts by adding the numerators
and copying the same denominator.
3. Simplify or write the answers in lowest terms if possible. To simplify a
fraction, think of a number that can divide both the numerator and the
denominator.
Examples:
1 2
1. 5 + 4
Step 1: Convert the given fractions to similar fractions by getting their LCD. The
LCD of the given fractions is 20. Then rename the given as similar fractions.
1 2 4 10
+ = +
5 4 20 20
1 2
2. 8 2 + 7
Step 1: Convert the given fractions to similar fractions by getting their LCD. The
LCD of the given fractions is 14. Then rename the given as similar fractions.
1 2 7 4
8 + =8 +
2 7 14 14
Step 2: Add the whole number numerators and copy the same denominator.
7 4 11
8 + =8
14 14 14
4 1
3. 5 5 +4 3
Step 1: Convert the given fractions to similar fractions by getting their LCD. The
LCD of the given fractions is 15. Then rename the given as similar fractions.
4 1 12 5
5 +4 = 5 + 4
5 3 15 15
Step 2: Add the whole number numerators and copy the same denominator.
12 5 17
5 + 4 =9
15 15 15
4 1 2
Therefore, the sum of 5 ∧4 is 10
5 3 15
D. Let’s Apply
Identify if each equation is correct or not. Put a (/) if it is correct and (X) if not.
2 3 9
______1. + =
5 6 10
4 1 7
______2. + =
8 5 10
1 2 3
______3. The sum of 3 + is 3
6 4 10
2 3 3
______4. 5 + 4 =5
8 6 4
6 3 3
______5. The sum of 8 + is 8
8 9 12
E. Let’s Evaluate
Add. Reduce the sum to lowest terms if needed. Add the following fractions. Choose
your answers from the fractions inside the box.
1 4 31 7 3 11
1 5 11
2 10 35 15 4 12
2 3
1. + = ______
7 5
4 1
2. + = ______
6 4
3 6
3. + = ______
4 8
2 1
4. 5 + = ______
5 15
3 1
5. 3 6 + 8 4 = ______
III. POST-ASSESSMENT
Add the following. Simplify the answers to lowest term if needed.
4 2 2 3
