Lesson 2-6 Notes Blank

This document discusses limits at infinity and provides examples of calculating limits as x approaches positive or negative infinity or as x approaches a number. It includes: 1) Definitions of limits at infinity and horizontal asymptotes 2) An example problem calculating 7 different limits of an unknown function 3) 5 examples of calculating limits of rational functions 4) 4 more challenging limit examples 5) A problem finding a function formula given limits conditions

Limits at Infinity: These are basically the end behaviors of the graph since we are looking for the limit as x gets
sufficiently large (𝑥 → ∞) or gets sufficiently large negatively (𝑥 → −∞)
• If lim 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝐿, then there is a horizontal asymptote 𝑦 = 𝐿
𝑥→±∞

1) For the function whose graph is given state the following.

a. lim 𝑓(𝑥) b. lim 𝑓(𝑥)

𝑥→−∞ 𝑥→∞

c. lim 𝑓(𝑥) d. lim− 𝑓(𝑥)

𝑥→0 𝑥→8

e. lim+ 𝑓(𝑥) f. lim + 𝑓(𝑥)

𝑥→8 𝑥→−4

g. equations of horizontal asymptotes

2) Sketch the graph of a function that satisfies all of the given conditions: lim 𝑓(𝑥) = −2, lim 𝑓(𝑥) = 0,
𝑥→−∞ 𝑥→∞
lim− 𝑓(𝑥) = ∞, lim+ 𝑓(𝑥) = −∞, 𝑓(−1) = 1
𝑥→2 𝑥→2

Find the limit (These are a little more challenging)

8) lim (√𝑡 6 + 5 − 𝑡 3 ) 9) lim (𝑥 4 − 𝑥) 10) lim+ 𝑒 cos 𝑥

𝑡→∞ 𝑥→−∞ 𝑥→0

11) lim 12) lim ln ( 𝑡 ) 13) lim ln(𝑥 2 − 1) − ln(𝑥 + 1)
𝑥→−∞ 1+𝑒 𝑥 𝑡→∞ 𝑥→∞

12) Find a formula for a function that satisfies the following conditions: lim 𝑓(𝑥) = 3, lim− 𝑓(𝑥) = ∞,
𝑥→±∞ 𝑥→2
lim+ 𝑓(𝑥) = −∞, 𝑓(4) = 0
𝑥→2
