Role of nurse manager

• All nurse managers carry out the managerial

functions of planning ,organizing, staffing

leading and controlling.


Coordinator of patient care with special emphasis
to optimum nursing cares
• First level mangers head nurse involve more in the
leading and controlling functions related to patient
care.
• Ensuring the delivery of the optimum nursing care is
the prime duty of nurse managers.
• Nurse manager need to know about the job
description of each member in the team.
• This will prevent nurses doing non nursing functions.
Appraisal of nursing care
• Evaluates the performance of the nurses. The aim is
to improve the quality of nursing care.

• Clinical supervision and helping poor performers to


improve through staff development are the two
important roles.
Resource allocator- allocating resources like
manpower and materials for the smooth functioning.

Leader

• Try to acquire traits of a leader. Leadership qualities


help the mangers to lead members more effectively.
Mentor
• Good manager is a mentor to her subordinates. An
experienced professional she can give proper advice
and guidance to team members.
Patients advocate
• Unit manager explain the rights of patients and right
of hospital in a convincing manner .
• Help to maintain trusting relationship between the
patient and nurse manager.
Disseminator
• Convey the information regarding the policies of the
organization to nurses with special reference to
patient care.
• Negotiator cordial relationship of nurse manager
with patients, staff and higher authorities helps to
perform this role in a fruitful manner.
Facilitator of the learning

• Helps to update their knowledge and skills through


staff development program me.

Promoter of the research

• Research culture in the unit. Motivate staff to


conduct research and publish articles.
Change agent
• Facilitate changes in nursing care to meet the
demands of the society. This enhance the
professional status of the nursing.
Managing health care setting

• Must keep abreast of the current and emerging


trends and issues that help her to meet the
challenges arise in the health care settings.

Role model

• By performing the all the above roles
