Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan in Holyoke, Massachusetts. It was originally called Mintonette but was later renamed volleyball by Dr. Alfred Halsted. The game spread from YMCA organizations to schools and became an Olympic sport in 1964. Volleyball is played by two teams on a divided court, separated by a net. The objective is for players to ground the ball on the opponent's side and prevent the same from happening on their own. It is governed by the Federation of International Volleyball.
