Direct Instruction Lesson Plan

Students will analyze how cultural assimilation is portrayed in a poem and novel by creating a venn diagram comparing the two works. They will first discuss experiences of feeling pressure to change to fit in, like the cultural assimilation experienced by immigrants. After reviewing a presentation on cultural assimilation, students will discuss how it relates to characters and themes in the novel. They will then take turns reading and analyzing the poem on Native American cultural assimilation. Finally, students will independently create the venn diagram, citing evidence from both works to complete the assignment.
