From Root To Flower
From Root To Flower
Story teller:
A very good morning to the honourable judges, time keeper, teachers, and
fellow friends. Today, I would like to tell you a story entitled, ‘From Root To
Flower.’
One day, Tina was riding her bicycle around the field. Suddenly, she
saw a field full of beautiful flowers. “Tomorrow is my mother birthday.” She
said to herself. “Maybe I should pick a flower for her.” Tina scanned the field
to find the most beautiful flower to give to her mother.
After a few minutes of searching, Tina found the flower she wanted. It
was pink and yellow and had the longest petals she had ever seen. However,
when she went to pull it out of the ground, it would not budge. Tina pulled
harder and harder, but the flower stayed where it was.
Tina sat down on the ground and began to think of other ways to get
the flower out of the ground. While she was thinking, she heard someone
whisper something in her ear.
“The roots,” the voice said again. “Try digging up the roots.”
“Why? They’re the most important part of the plant!” the voice exclaimed.
“They help the plant stay in the ground. They also help the plant absorb water
and minerals.”
“Plants have many parts,” the voice replied. “In fact, the flower itself is just
one of many parts of the whole plant. Each part plays a role in helping the
plant stay alive. The other main parts of the plant are the stems and the
leaves.”
“So, plants have four main parts: flowers, stems, leaves and roots, each part
of a plant has a job to do” Tina sings.
Tina pointed at the stem. “What does this do?” she asked.
“The stems helps water and nutrients get to other parts of the plant.”
“Hmm, so, the roots suck up water and minerals from the ground, and the
stem carries it to the leaves and other parts of the plant,” Tina said.
“Exactly, it also takes food from the leaves and carries it to other parts of the
plant,” the voice replied.
“Wait a second!” said Tina. “What do you mean by food from the leaves?
“The leaves job is to make food for the plant. They capture sunlight and use a
process called photosynthesis.”
Pho…pho..pho…pho..pho..pho..
Photosynthesis.
For the plant to make food
Using CO2 yeah!
Pho..pho..pho…pho…pho..pho…
Photosynthesis
With water and sunlight..
Also chlorophyll
Pho…pho..pho…pho..pho..pho…
Photosynthesis
The products are glucose and some oxygen..yeah!
The flowers are usually colourful and sometimes smell to attract insects!”
Tina said. “I never realized a flower was so important. I just wanted to take
something pretty to my mother for her birthday. I will pull up you from the root
to flower. Then, I will plant you in a pot. So, you can continue to grow!’
Tina dug up the plant, roots and all, and planted it in a pot for her mother as
soon as she got home.
I hope I have broaden your view and knowledge about the parts of the plant.
That’s all from me.
Thank you.
