Course Aims
 To develop understanding among students to the types of dynamic systems, formulating
equation of motion and their respective solutions
 To enable students to convert a real dynamic problem into simpler equivalent models so
that response of the system can be calculated in an approximate sense.
 To educate students with explicit design procedures and criteria for earthquake
engineering and structural dynamics, both in elastic and post elastic region.
 To apply seismic building code provisions (Building Code of Pakistan) for determining
seismic demand for structures using various methods of response calculations.
Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CLOs)
The student is expected to be able to design a small to medium steel buildings according to
ASCE standards. Upon successful completion of this module, students will be able to:

Practice, fundamental concepts in Engineering Seismology.
Implementation of ODEs and Matrix Algebra.

2. Understanding To explain Effect of Strength, Stiffness, Ductility, Toughness on


dynamic systems. review of ground motion, ground motion
parameters. Combination of stiffnesses in series and parallel.
To interpret mass moment of inertia. To illustrate dynamic
degree of Freedom and associated characteristics.

3. Applying Applying D’Alambert’s Principle to SDOF and MDOF,


Newtons 2nd Law of Motion to formulate equation of motion,
Law of conservation of Energy for quantification of frequency.
To illustrate concept of stiffness, strength, ductility,
toughness using applied examples. To illustrate structure
assessment for ductility demand and Response Modification
Factors (R Factor). To demonstrate application of codal
provision for practicing professionals.

4. Analyzing To determine Damped and Undamped SDOF and MDOF


system response subjected to known initial conditions and base
excitations, To compare Elastic and Inelastic systems and
compare their dynamic response. To identify ductility demand,
modal analysis, modal response spectrum analysis. Time
history analysis, Case Studies.

5. Evaluating Codal Requirements, Ductility demand /capacity application


through inelastic response of structures of SDOF with Lumped
Mass. Case Studies regarding codal requirements for buildings.
Modal Response Spectrum Analysis, modal decoupling and
total response calculations and decision on participating modes
as per codal provisions. Discussions on various performance

Syllabus
The following topics will be covered in the course through lecturing and home assignments.
1. Fundamentals of Dynamic analysis. Mass moment of inertia of simple and composite
bodies. Undamped and damped vibration. Free and Forced vibration.

2. Formulation of equation of motion (EOM) for SDOF systems.

3. Determination of Frequency of SDOF systems by i) formulation EOM and ii) Principle of


Conservation of energies.

4. Response of SDOF system due to Free and forced (Harmonic) vibrations.

5. Review of Engineering Seismology required for Earthquake Engineering . Fourier


amplitude spectrum analysis. Response of elastic SDOF systems subjected to earthquake
excitations. Response history. Response spectrum and Design Spectrum for elastic systems.

6. Earthquake resistant design philosophy. Response of Inelastic SDOF systems


subjected to earthquake excitations. Normalized yield strength and yield strength reduction
factors for an elastoplastic SDOF system. Ductility capacity and Ductility demand. Effect of
Natural time period on ductility demand. Inelastic response spectrum and its applications.

7. Free vibration in Undamped MDOF system. Modal Analysis of MDOF shear frames.

9. Building code of Pakistan (seismic provision 2007) procedure to determine seismic


demand using Equivalent lateral force (ELF), Modal Response Spectrum analysis (RSA) and
Time history analysis (THA) methods on multistory buildings.
10. Application of codal provisions for building with plan and vertical irregularities.
