School of Mathematics 2021 Semester 1 MAT1841 Continuous Mathematics For Computer Science Assignment 1
2021 Semester 1
• To be submitted on moodle by 11:59pm AEST Friday 2 April 2021. See the instructions
under the assessment tab on moodle. Be sure to press the “Submit Assignment” button
to complete submission.
• You must submit a single pdf document of size at most 10MB. It is the student’s respon-
sibility to ensure that the file is uncorrupted.
• Each assignment must include a signed and dated assignment cover sheet.
• A penalty of 10% of the total possible mark per day will apply for late work.
• Show all working. You are required to clearly explain your steps using both English and
mathematical expressions. Most of the marks will be allocated for clear working and
explanations. A mathematical writing guide is on Moodle.
1. Let u = (5, −2, 3), v = (1, 2, 3) and w = (−1, 2, 3) be vectors in R3 .
Show that u × (v × w) = (u · w)v − (u · v)w.
[10 marks]
3. Show that the line defined by r(t) = (7, −2, 3) + t(−2, 1, −1)
does not intersect the plane defined by 3x + 5y − z = −3.
[10 marks]
4. Determine the equation of the line formed from the intersection of the two planes,
2x − 3y + 5z = 2 and −3x + y − z = 4.

(c) Use the result from (b) to solve the following system of equations.
[10 marks]
2x + 4y − 5z = 6
−x + 7y = 0
x−y+z =1
