Niagara - Wiring Non Optoisolated Devices

Some RS485 devices are not opto-isolated and require a different wiring configuration than opto-isolated devices. When non opto-isolated devices are present on an RS485 network, a 3-wire cable with separate ground wire is needed, whereas a 2-wire twisted pair is sufficient for networks with only opto-isolated devices. The document provides examples of Innon devices that are and aren't opto-isolated, and diagrams showing how to wire networks with or without non opto-isolated devices.

Tridium Niagara

BACnet routers Some RS485 devices come with opto-isolators installed on the RS485 port, and some don't.

It is important to know how to wire devices on an RS485 network when a non opto-isolated
device is present.

From Innon, here is a list of devices that are NOT opto-isolated:

iSMA MIX series (all)

iSMA MINI series (all)

iSMA FCU controllers (all)

iSMA AAC20 controllers (all)

iSMA MG-IP converter

All the devices not listed here, like the iSMA MAC controller, the Tridium JACE, the
SierraMonitor Bacnet router, Power Meters etc are ALL opto-isolated.

So, how do you wire the 2 different devices?

No matter the devices and line topology used, an RS485 cable should always be shielded, with
18-22AWG wiring and the shield connected ONLY in one end of the line.

When the devices on the RS485 network are all opto-isolated, the wiring will use a 2 wire
twisted pair shielded cable, where the shield is connected to each device like shown here:

When some devices on the RS485 are NOT opto-isolated, the shield can no longer be used as
"ground". A third wire will be required for the ground connection, and the shield is just simply
daisy-chained on each cable junction, like shown here:

The cable recommended in this type of connection is the Belden 9842, which has 2 twisted
pairs. A pair will be used for + and -, one of the wires of the second pair will be used as
"ground" and the fourth wire will be not-used.
