7.1 Parabolas Worksheet and Answers

This document contains a worksheet with problems involving parabolas. The problems ask students to write parabola equations in standard form given characteristics of the parabola, find the depth of a canal at a given distance from the edge, calculate the maximum height reached by a launched T-shirt, determine the focal zone of a parabolic mirror, write an equation modeling an arch, write equations in standard form, and sketch and identify characteristics of a parabola given its equation.

1 Parabola Worksheet

1. Write each equation in standard form given the following characteristics:

a. Parabola, focus is at ( −7,6 ) , opens left, and contains the point ( −4,10)

b. Parabola, focus is at ( 3,3) , opens up, and contains the point ( 23,18)

2. CANAL A cross section of an irrigation canal is a parabola. If the surface of the water is 40 feet wide and the canal is
25 feet deep at the center, how deep is it 18 feet from the edge?

3. T-SHIRTS The cheerleaders at the high school basketball game launch T-shirts into the stands after a victory. The
launching device propels the shirts into the air at an initial velocity of 32 feet per second. A shirt’s distance y in feet
above the ground after x seconds can be modeled by y−5 = −16𝑥 2 + 32x.
a. Write the equation in standard form.

b. What is the maximum height that a T-shirt reaches?

4. SOLAR ENERGY A solar furnace in France's Eastern Pyrenees uses a parabolic mirror that is illuminated by
sunlight reflected off a field of heliostats, which are devices that track and redirect sunlight. Experiments in solar
research are performed in the focal zone part of the tower. If the parabolic mirror is 6.25 meters deep, how many
meters in front of the parabola is the focal zone?

5. ARCHITECTURE The entrance to an open-air plaza has a parabolic arch above the 2 columns. The light in the
center is located at the focus of the parabola. Write an equation that models the parabola. Let the vertex be at the
origin.

7.1 Review
6. Given the equation of the conic, write the equation in standard form:

a. 4 x 2 − 16 x + 48 y + 16 = 0 b. 2 y − 16 y − 20 x + 72 = 0
