Grade 6 Teaching Plan

2D and 3D Shapes (Nets of 3D Shapes)

1. Draws the net of cubes, cuboids, cones, cylinders, prisms and pyramids

Draws the nets of a cube (1 period)

Some 3D shapes, like cubes and pyramids, can be opened out or unfolded into a flat shape. The
unfolded shape is called the net of the solid.

Below is a picture of a cube.

A cube consists of 6 congruent squares. When we open a cube, we can get the net of a cube. Below is
one example of the net of a cube.

The net of a cube is determined by how you open the cube. A 3D shape can have more than 1 net.
Mathematics activity: Draw nets of a cube
Make a group of 2-3 students. Try different ways to open a cube, for example like on the picture
below.

Note that the four nets below are the same.

Find nets of a cube which different from the net shown above, draw them on the board. How many
net of a cube can you find?

Do you know that a cube can have 11 different nets like shown in the diagram below.

Draws nets of cuboid (1 period)

Study the cuboid below.
A cuboid consists of 6 faces. Unlike a cube, the faces of cuboid can consist of three different
rectangles, depend on the length of its sides.

An example of a net for a cube above is shown below.

Discussion:
Study the cuboid below.

Work in groups of 2-3 students. Sketch two nets of the cuboid above. Next, draw the nets with
correct measurement and prove the nets can be folded into the cuboid.

Nets of cone and cylinders (1 period)

Math activity: Investigating the net of a cone.
We usually see two kinds of cone; the tall cone and the wide cone.
Let’s investigate the net for each type of cone. Take a tall cone and a wide cone and open them to
find the nets.

Here is an example of a net of a tall cone.

How is a wide cone’s net looked like?

Math activity: Investigating the net of a cylinder.
We can easily find cylinder shapes objects around us, from trash bin until fish can.

Let’s investigate the net of a cylinder!

Here is an example of a net of cylinder.

Nets of prism and pyramids (1 period)

Study the pentagonal prism below.

If we open the prism, we can have a net for the prism as follow.

Finding surface area a cube (1 period)

Study the cube below.

A cube has 6 faces. All the faces of a cube are squares with the same side length. To see the faces of
a cube, we can open the cube as shown below.

Surface area of a cube is the total area of all the faces altogether. For example, suppose that we have
a cube with side length 5 cm.

What is the surface area of a cube with 5 cm side length?

Model/Diagram
If we unfold the cubes, we get the cube net as follow.
Math Sentence
We can see that the surface area of the cube is 6 times area of the square with side length 5 cm. Since
the area of a square with side length 5 cm is 5  5 cm2, we can write like below.

Surface area of the cube = 6  (5  5)

Calculation

Surface area of cube = 6  (5  5) = 150

Conclusion
So, the surface area of the cubes is 150 cm2.
Next, let’s solve the problem below.

What is the surface area of a cube with 6 cm side length?

Model/Diagram
Here is a cube with side length 6 cm.

If we unfold the cubes, we get the cube net as follow.

We can see that the surface area of the cube is 6 times area of the square with side length 6 cm.

Math Sentence
Surface area of the cube = 6  (6  6) cm2

Calculation
Surface area of cube = 6  (6  6) = 216

Conclusion
The surface area of the cubes is 216 cm2.

Discussion:

 Cube with side length 2 m, surface area = _____________

 Cube with side length 8 cm, surface area = _____________

 Cube with side length 12 m, surface area = _____________

 Cube with side length 9.5 cm, surface area = _____________

Discussion

 Cube with surface area 54 m2, side length = _____________

 Cube with surface area 150 cm2, side length = _____________

 Cube with surface area 384 cm2, side length = _____________

Finding surface area a cuboid (1 period)

Study the cuboid below.

Like cubes, cuboids have 6 faces. All of the faces form rectangle, but not necessarily have the same
size. But we can observe that the front face is congruent with the back face, the left congruent with
the right and the base congruent with the top.

Observe the faces of a cuboid below.

Surface area of a cuboid is the total area of all the faces altogether. For cuboid above, we can write
like below.

Math Sentence
Let’s group the faces into front-back, left-right, and base-top.

Area of the front-back faces = 2  (8  5) cm2

Area of the left-right faces = 2  (5  6) cm2
Area of the base-top faces = 2  (8  6) cm2
Therefore,
Surface area of the cuboid = 2  (8  5) + 2  (5  6) + 2  (8  6) cm2

Calculation
Surface area of the cuboid = 2  (8  5) + 2  (5  6) + 2  (8  6)

= 80 + 60 + 96

= 236

Conclusion

The surface area of the cuboid is 236 cm2.

Discussion:
Find the surface area of cuboids below.
 length = 6 cm, width = 6 cm, height = 5 cm

 length = 7 cm, width = 5 cm, height 6 cm

 length = 36 cm, width = 18 cm, height 12 cm

 length = 15 cm, width = 10 cm, height 4.5 cm

 length = 2.4 m, width = 3.7 m, height 4.8 m

Finding unknown side of a cuboid if we the surface area and two other sides is given (1 period)
Suppose that the surface area of the cube below is 148 cm2.

The length of the cube is 6 cm and the width is 5 cm.

What is the height of the cube?

We know the surface area of the cube is 148 cm2. Surface area is the combination of all surface
together. Let’s calculate the area of each face of the cuboid.

Faces Area Result

Base 65 30
Top 65 30
Front 6h 6h
Back 6h 6h
Left 5h 5h
Right 5h 5h
Surface area 148 cm2

So, we have equation as follow,

30 + 30 + (6  h) + (6  h) +(5  h) +(5  h) = 148

60 + (6  h) + (6  h) +(5  h) +(5  h) = 148
(6  h) + (6  h) +(5  h) +(5  h) = 88
22  h = 88
h = 88  22
h = 4
Therefore, the height of the cuboid is 4 cm.
A more brief way to do it is as follow,
From the table we have that:
60 + 22h = 148
22h = 148 – 60
= 88
h = 88  22
=4
Therefore, the height of the cuboid is 4 cm.

Discussion:
Find the missing length of the cuboid given information below.
 Surface area = 120 cm2, length = 5 cm, width = 4 cm, height = ?

 Surface area = 126 cm2, length = 6 cm, height = 5 cm, width = ?

 Surface area = 220 cm2, height = 4 cm, width = 5 cm, length = ?

Finding the surface area of a cylinder (1 period)

Study the cylinder below.

What is the surface area of the cylinder above?

If we unfold the cylinder, we get the net of the cylinder.

Observe that the surface area of the cylinder is consist of three faces; 2 circles from the base and the
top of the cylinder, and a rectangle from its lateral surface.

The area of the circles part

For the circles part, because the base and the top face are identical circles, then the area is calculated
as follow.
Area of base and top circles =2rr
= 2  3.14  5  5
= 157
So, the area of the base and the top of the cylinder is 157 cm2.

The area of the rectangle part

For the rectangle part, we know that width of the rectangle equal to the height of the cylinder, which
is 10 cm. But how about the length of the rectangle?

When we open the lateral surface of the circle and get a rectangle, the length of the rectangle equals
to the circumference of the base/top face of the cyinder, as shown on the picture below.

So,
Length of rectangle = Circumference of circle
= 2  3.14  5
= 31.4 cm
Therefore,
The area of rectangle = length  height = 10  31.4 = 314 cm2.

Combining the two result,

The surface area of the cylinder = 157 + 314 = 471 cm2.
