Quiz No. 4

The document provides instructions and 4 situations/problems regarding calculating design base shear, shear forces, and overturning moments for buildings. Situation 1 involves a 35m building with floor weights and asks to calculate design base shear, 5th floor shear, and base moment. Situation 2 involves a 5-story building with a given base shear and floor weights, and asks to calculate shear forces at various floors. Situation 3 gives design base shear and building dimensions/weights, asking to calculate roof shear and forces/moments for different vibration periods. Situation 4 describes a 3-story building and asks to calculate base shear and load distributions at each level.

QUIZ No. 3
Solve the following problems completely and correctly. Box your final answers.

SITUATION 1 – A 35 m. building with an average height of 3.5 m. each floor, has a weight of 4,000 kN for each floor and
3,000 kN for the roof top. The building is located at Makati City with a zone factor of 0.40. It is located 9.2 km from the
West Valley Fault System with a soil profile type A and Seismic Source Type A. The use of the building is to carry
hazardous facilities with an importance factor of 1.25, Modification factor R = 8.5 (Special Moment Resisting Concrete
Frame). Ct is determined to be 0.075.

a. Determine the design base shear.

b. Determine the shear at the 5th floor.
c. Determine the moment at the base.

SITUATION 2 – A 5 storey building is constructed with 12 ft, storey heights. The base shear has been calculated as 160
kips. Each storey floor has weight of 700 kips. If the natural period of oscillation is 0.5 sec.

a. Compute the shear at the 5th floor.

b. Compute the shear force at the 4th floor.
c. Compute the shear force at the 3 rd floor.

SITUATION 3 – The design base shear of the three-storey building is 450 kN.

Given:
Dimensions: Storey Weights:
H1 = 4.0 m W1 = 1160 kN
H2 = 3.5 m W2 = 1000 kN
H3 = 3.5 m W3 = 840 kN

a. Determine the shear force (kN) at the roof level, if the natural period of vibration of the building T = 0.6 second.
b. If the natural vibration of the building T = 0.9 sec, determine the lateral force (kN) at the roof level.
c. How much is the overturning moment at the base if T = 0.9 sec?

SITUATION 4 - Consider a three-storey reinforced concrete masonry shear wall building that will be used as an
evacuation center. The building will be constructed in Brgy. Purok-A-Bassit, Vigan City, Ilocos sur. Each floor has a weight
of 3200 kN and wt. of roof 1700 kN and a total height of 12.00 meters (4 m for each floor). Calculate the base shear of
the structure and the distribution of loads at each level of the structure. Assume the total length of shear wall to be 8.00
m and the effective horizontal cross-sectional area to be 64.90 m2 in the first storey.
