This document contains lessons on sampling distribution of sample means. It discusses key concepts like parameter vs statistic, random sampling, and constructing the sampling distribution. The document provides examples to illustrate these concepts, including listing all possible samples from a population, calculating the mean of each sample, and creating a frequency distribution of sample means. It also discusses finding the mean and variance of the sampling distribution of means using the central limit theorem.

Lesson Introduction
Researchers use sampling if taking a census of the entire population is impractical. Data from the sample are
used to calculate statistics, which are estimates of the corresponding population parameters.

For instance, a sample might be drawn from the population, its mean is calculated, and this value is used as a
statistic or an estimate for the population mean.

Thus, descriptive measures computed from a population are called parameters while descriptive measures
computed from a sample are called statistics. We say that the sample mean is an estimate of the population
mean μ.

Discussion Points
Sampling Distribution of Sample Means
 The number of samples of size n that can be drawn from a population of size N is given by NCn.
 A sampling distribution of sample means is a frequency distribution using the means computed from all
possible random samples of a specific size taken from a population.
 The probability distribution of the sample means is also called the sampling distribution of the sample
means.

Steps in Constructing the Sampling Distribution of the Means

1. Determine the number of possible samples that can be drawn from the population using the formula:
NCn
where N = size of the population n = size of the sample
2. List all the possible samples and compute the mean of each sample.

3. Construct a frequency distribution of the sample means obtained in Step 2.

EXAMPLE:
A population consists of the numbers 2, 4, 9, 10, and 5. List all possible samples of size 3 from this
population. Compute the mean of each sample. Prepare a sampling distribution of the sample means.

Solution:
Step1:
There are 10 possible combinations. How?
N= refers to to number of population. Which is 5 numbers  2, 4, 9, 10 and 5
N=refers to the given sample size  3

Reminder:
Make sure your combination of numbers does not repeat. See the example below.
Sample1: 2, 4, 9
Sample2: 4, 2, 9 (this is not allowed since you already have 2,4,9)

The possible samples of size 3 from 2, 4, 9, 10, and 5 are…

Step2:
ADD another column for the mean. The mean of each sample are as follows:

Step3:
ADD TWO columns for the frequency and probability. The sampling distribution of the sample means

Deepening Activity

1. A population consists of the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. List all possible samples of size 2 from this
population. Compute the mean of each sample. Prepare a sampling distribution of the sample means.

How many are the possible combinations? ________

Sample Sample Mean x́ Frequency Probability P( x́ )

2. A group of students got the following scores in a test: 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, and 21. Consider samples
of size 5 that can be drawn from this population. List all the possible samples and the corresponding mean.
Construct the sampling distribution of the sample means.

FINDING THE MEAN AND VARIANCE OF THE SAMPLING DISTRIBUTION OF MEANS

Name: ____________________________________________________ Total Score: __________

Grade Level and Section: ____________________________________ Date: ________________

Target Skills At the end of the lesson I must:

 illustrate random sampling;
 distinguish between parameter and statistic; and
 construct sampling distribution of sample means.

Pre-Assessment Activity Score: _____

Lesson Introduction
Statisticians do not just describe the variation of the individual data values about the mean of the population.
They are also interested to know how the means of the samples of the same size taken from the same
population vary about the population mean.

The Central Limit Theorem

If random samples of size n are drawn from a population, then as n becomes larger, the
sampling distribution of the mean approaches the normal distribution, regardless of the shape of the
population distribution.

Example:
Consider a population consisting of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Suppose samples of size 2 are drawn from this
population. Describe the sampling distribution of the sample means.

Step 1. Determine the number of possible samples of size n = 2.

Use the formula NCn. Here N = 5 and n = 2.
5C2 = 10
So, there are 10 possible samples of size 2 that can be drawn.

Step 2. List all possible samples and their corresponding means.

Step 3.
Construct the sampling distribution of the sample means.

Step 4.
Compute the mean of the sampling distribution of the sample means (μ X). Follow these steps:
 Multiply the sample mean by the corresponding probability.
 Add the results.

Continuation of the first example:

Consider a population consisting of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Suppose samples of size 2 are drawn from this
population. Compute the variance the sampling distribution of the sample means .

Example:

A population has a mean of 60 and a standard deviation of 5. A random sample of 16

measurements is drawn from this population.
Describe the sampling distribution of the sample means by computing its mean and standard
deviation. Assume that the population is infinite.

Deepening Activity
1. Consider all samples of size 3 from this population:

1, 3, 4, 6, 8

a. Construct the sampling distribution of the sample means.

b. Calculate the mean of the sampling distribution of the sample means. Create your own
table.

2. The scores of individual students on a national test have a normal distribution with mean
18.6 and standard deviation 5.9.

At Federico Ramos Rural High School, 76 students took the test. If the scores at this school
have the same distribution as national scores, what are the mean and standard deviation of
the sample mean for 76 students?
