Online Orientation for Graduating Students

and Pre-Employment Orientation Seminar

CAMAING, CHARISSE MAE R. BSIE 4A

Upon attending the Online Orientation for Graduating Students and Pre-
Employment Orientation Seminar, I realized that as a graduating student, there is still a
lot to learn for us to cope up with the labor market after we graduate amidst this
pandemic.

The two day seminar was divided into: Online

Orientation for Graduating Students on February 17,
2021 and Pre-Employment Seminar on February
18, 2021 from 9:00 a.m. until 12 noon through a
virtual platform via google meet and FB live and
some selected students for the onsite seminar.

The Online Orientatioon for Graduating

Students starts with a prayer followed by our Philippine National Anthem and the
CBSUA Hymm through an audio-visual presentation.

The opening remarks were given by Mr. Ian Sagario stating that according to
Ched Covid Advisory, OJT’s and Internship Program are suspended resulting for the
graduating students to have an In-Campus OJT. Our new Campus Administrator Mr.
Zeus Lositaño also gave a message, followed by Ms. Mary Franchesca Villafuerte, our
University Nurse who discussed about the Safety Protocol: The New Normal which
entails our safety measures to follow while we are in school for the OJT’s and
Internship.

There were three resource speakers who will discuss

different topics that will surely be helpful for the graduating
students once they will be able to work in their chosen field.
Professor Charmayn Nate talked about the Personality
Enhancement wherein she discussed the proper grooming
one should be aware especially the Do’s and Dont’s attire
when applying for a job, the hair, the nails, hair and make up
and Personal hygiene. She also emphasizes that the first impressions affects not just
our personality but also our character as individuals. She also shares us the life skills to
help us improve our personality and the reasons why we should always be ourselves.

Professor Rhea B. Abergos, the second

resource speaker discussed about Stress
Management where she talks on the causes of
stress, the stressors, its type which is Positive
(Eustress) and negative (Distress), on how to
control stress using the ABC Strategy which
stands for Awareness, Balance, and Control. She
also discussed about some stress management
techniques, its benefits and the alternatives.
Professor Abergos ends her presentation with a
quotation, “Don’t Worry Be Happy” – it may sound easy but it is hard to do, yet, with
proper guidance and awareness, I believe that we were able to fight stress.

Lastly, Professor Ma. Expedita Artiaga

discusses about Gender-Responsive Workplace.
Her presentation is divided into two: Towards
Gender Sensitive/Gender Responsive Workplace
and Sexual Harassment, Photo Video Voyeurism
and Safe Spaces Act. Professor Artiaga gaves us
a brief summary on gender and its terminologies,
the emerging issues in gender in the workplace
which are stereotypes, biases, discrimination and
inequality. She also presented some legal bases
towards a gender sensitive workplace and
showed us some photos depicting sexual harassment in the workplace for us to be
aware that such actions falls under sexual harassment and other forms of sexual
offenses, where to file sexual harassment complaints and its classifications.

On the second day, the seminar is about the Pre-Employment Orientation

wherein the University has invited two resource speakers from the HR Department of
ST Micoelectronics and the other is from DOLE.

The first speaker is Ms. Jovy Paquiding Orbon from the HR Department of ST
Microelectronics who discusses the Job Hunting during Covid 19. She emphasized on
focusing on the company’s actively hiring, stating that we should not limit our
opportunity. Focus on online professional development since face to face interaction is
not yet allowed, we have to look for ways to developed ourselves without requiring us to
have a face to face interaction. That is where the online platform would be of great help.
Next is expanding our network and check up on it, by means of searching other than the
topic itself, the related searches will help us in making our network broader. Another is
being specific on our skills that can be applied across many industries, when we apply,
we have to be ourselves, don’t focus on impressing others. Ms. Paquiding also teaches
us to tailor our resume, the\at we have to be very specfic and put the right details. Then,
we have to learn and enroll new skills, for it will be our advantage, learning new skills
will help us to be more flexible at the same time will be added to our resume and when
the employer sees to it that we are skilled they will easily hire us. Lastly, Ms. Paquiding
teaches us to learn the onlline interview techniques, the Do’s and Don’ts for us to be
prepared when the interview comes. She also showed us a video of Ernesto Baliza and
Cyril Burce who became the best employees of ST Micoelectronics who happened to be
a former CBSUA student.

The next resource speaker is Mrs. Athena M. Florida from DOLE who discusses
Labor Education for Graduating Students (LEGS). She discusses about the pay for the
employees, the over time pay for regular and special days, when holidays, night shifts,
etc. She also shares some tips on resume, the Do’s and Dont’s and the jobs on other
fields. Mrs. Florida ends her presentation with the quotation, “Education is Expensive
but Ignorance is more Costly” – indeed, education is quite expensive but the knowledge
we gained in studying will help us be at par with oters and be able to compete head on,
on the other hand ignorance will surely be more costly most especially when coping up
with the adversities that we are facing nowadays. Being educated will surely be of great
advantage for someone to be able to compete with the job market against someone
who is not.
