He gained experience early in his career assisting with projects like the Kasarani Moi National Sports Complex. Famous Kenyan Architect – Phillip Kungu

Kenya is a country blessed with a rich landscape and iconic buildings that have unique designs.

The said buildings share something in common – they are designed by a talented architect. One

such architect who has made a name for himself both locally and internationally is Phillip

Kungu. Phillip Kungu is arguably the most decorated architect in Kenya. The 60-year-old

designer has travelled the world in numerous occasions serving as the head of top architectural

bodies such as the Common Wealth Association of Architects and the International Union of

Architects. The titles are so many that he has been christened the title of Mr Chairman (Munene,

2018). Currently, Phillip serves as the head of the Nairobi City County Public Service Board.

Phillip started his architectural journey early in his college years. At the third year of his studies,

he was part of the team which planned the Kasarani Moi National Sports Complex. He gained

much experience while working with established architects during this practice. He graduated

from university and joined several renowned architectural practices in Kenya (Munene, 2018).

His exemplary work in these bodies granted him the favour of receiving a scholarship to pursue

his Master's Degree at Finland’s Helsinki University of Technology.

On completion of his studies, Phillip set up a practice in Nairobi with the assistance of his

longterm friend, Architect Nelson Otieno. The firm is called Otieno & Kungu Associates where

Most works by Otieno and Kungu associates are focused on the development of residential and

commercial zones like hotels, apartments, and offices (Munene, 2018). He has taken part in the

design of iconic buildings around East Africa and was the recipient of the 2000 US Government

International Visitor Program Award. He is arguably one of Kenya’s greatest architects.
