Green APLEducation Ltd A2 CHEMISTRY

ELECTROCHEMISTRY – 2
1. A standard hydrogen electrode is used as the standard for comparison with other
electrodes.
a) State the electrode potential of the standard hydrogen electrode.
(1)

b) List four important features of the standard hydrogen electrode.

(4)

c) A standard hydrogen electrode and a standard silver electrode are connected to

form an electrochemical cell. The standard reduction potential for the silver half-cell
is:
Ag+(aq) + e- Ag(s) E = + 0.80 V
i) How would the two half-cells be connected to form a cell ?

(2)

ii) Which species in the cell arrangement will act as the oxidising agent ?
(1)

iii) Write an ionic equation for the cell reaction which occurs spontaneously.
(2)

2. Draw a labelled diagram of a standard half-cell which has the reduction potential
shown by the reaction:
Fe3+(aq) + e- Fe2+ (aq) E = + 0.77 V

3. Cell diagrams and the electrode potentials of some cells are shown below for four
different cell arrangements. The letters D, E F and G represent four unspecified
metals.
Deduce the electrode potentials of the metal/metal ion half-cells represented by the
letters D to G.
E
Ni(s) | Ni2+(aq) || D2+(aq) | D(s) 0.5 V
E(s) | E2+(aq) || Ag+(aq) | Ag(s) 1.0 V
F(s) | F2+(aq) || Cu2+(aq) | Cu(s) 0.09 V
Mn(s) | Mn2+(aq) || G3+(aq) | G(s) 0.18 V
a) D2+(aq) | D(s)
(1)

b) E2+(aq) | E(s)
(1)

c) F2+(aq) | F(s)
(1)

d) G3+(aq) | G(s)
(1)

4. Dichromate(VI) ions and manganese(IV) oxide may both behave as oxidising agents in
acidic conditions. The standard reduction potentials of the redox systems are shown
below.
Cr2O72- + 14 H+ + 6e- 2 Cr3+ + 7 H2O E = + 1.33 V
MnO2 + 4 H+ + 2e- Mn2+ + 2 H2O E = + 1.23 V
a) Construct an ionic equation for the cell reaction which occurs when a cell is made
using the half-cells indicated by the equations.

(3)

b) Which species acts as the oxidising agent in the cell ?

(1)

c) Deduce the standard electrode potential of the cell.
