Simplification of A Force and Couple System: Continued

This document discusses methods for simplifying systems of forces and moments by reducing them to an equivalent single resultant force and moment. It describes how concurrent, coplanar, and parallel force systems can each be reduced to a single resultant force acting at a point, and how a resultant moment can be introduced by applying the force at a distance from that point. Examples are provided for practitioners to work through applying these methods.

Simplification of a Force and

Couple System
Continued
Simplification of a Force and Couple System
We have shown that we can reduce several applied forces and couple
moments to a single resultant force FR and a resultant moment MR

In some cases, we can go even further with simplifications. Sometimes,

we can reduce our system to a single force FR
Simplification of a Force and Couple System
• Concurrent Force Systems
• Coplanar Force Systems
• Parallel Force Systems
Concurrent Force System
Lines of action of all the forces intersect at a
common point O

Produces no moment about O

Equivalent system is a single resultant force

acting at O

𝐹! = # 𝐹⃗
Coplanar Force System
Lines of action of all the forces all lie in the same plane.
Resultant force is also in this plane.

The moment about O is for any of the forces is perpendicular to the

plane. The resultant moment is perpendicular to the resultant force.
Coplanar Force System
Resultant moment can be replaced by moving the resultant force FR a
perpendicular distance d away from point O so that it is producing the
same moment (MR)O
Coplanar Force System

𝑀! " = 𝐹! 𝑑 = % 𝑀"

𝑀! "
𝑑=
𝐹!
Parallel Force System
All the forces are parallel. As seen below, all the forces are parallel to the
z axis. So, the resultant force will also be parallel to the z axis.
The moment produced by each force will lie in the plane of the plate, so
the resultant couple moment will lie in the plane of the plate as well.
Parallel Force System
The resultant couple moment is perpendicular to the resultant force,
so it must be about the a axis.
Parallel Force System
Can be reduced to FR acting at a distance d from O.
Parallel Force System
𝑀! " = 𝐹! 𝑑 = % 𝑀"

∑ 𝑀"
𝑑=
𝐹!
Procedure
• Set up coordinate axes with origin at O. Locate FR some arbitrary distance d
from O.

• FR = sum of all the forces in the system. For coplanar, resolve each force
into x and y components.

• (MR)O = sum of all the couple moments in the system, plus the moments of
all the forces about O.

"! "
• (MR)O can be used to find FR 𝑑= #!
Examples
4.113 Replace the loading acting on the beam by a single resultant force.
Specify where the force acts, measured from end A.
Try this one on your own.

4.114 Replace the loading acting on the beam by a single resultant force.
Specify where the force acts, measured from end B.
4.115 Determine the magnitude and direction θ of force F and its
placement d on the beam so that the loading system is equivalent to a
resultant force of 12 kN acting vertically downward at point A and a
clockwise couple moment of 50 kN·m
Try this one on your own.
4.116 Determine the magnitude and direction θ of force F and its
placement d on the beam so that the loading system is equivalent to a
resultant force of 10 kN acting vertically downward at point A and a
clockwise couple moment of 45 kN·m
4.134 The building slab is subjected to four parallel
column loadings. Determine the equivalent resultant
force and specify its location (x, y) on the slab.
Take F1 = 8 kN and F2 = 9 kN
Try this one on your own.

4.135 The building slab is subjected to four parallel

column loadings. Determine F1 and F2 if the resultant
force acts trough point (12m, 10m)
