Secularism

Secularism refers to the separation of religion from political, economic, social, and cultural aspects of life so that religion remains a purely personal matter. This provides full freedom and tolerance of all religions without discrimination. Secularism is crucial for democratic countries as it allows for religious freedom, fair decision making without religious influence, and freedom of speech without religious pressure. However, some governments still impose high restrictions on religion and social hostilities involving religion have increased. To fully achieve secularism, states and religious groups must remain independent and follow the law, and politicians should not use religious agendas for personal gain. Proper implementation of secularism requires recognition and equal treatment of all people regardless of attributes.

Secularism
What is Secularism?

Secular refers to being “separate” from religion or having no religious base. What Secularism
really means is the separation of religion from political, economic, social, and cultural aspects of life.
Religion is then only a purely personal matter. It provides full freedom to all religions and tolerance of all
religions. It also stances for equal opportunities for followers of all religions. This means that there is no
discrimination of religions whatsoever.

Importance of Secularism

Secularism is something very crucial for any democratic country. Some benefits are:

Religious Freedom: Living in a secular state has several benefits. Religious freedom is one of them.
People are unrestricted to follow the religion of their choice or not follow any.

Fair Decision Making: The independence of the state from religious groups make the fair decision
making. This presents equal treatment to all the religious and non-religious groups. No religious
community can pressure the state to make decisions in their favor.

Freedom of Speech: The ideology of secularism also allows people to express their opinions and
beliefs freely. As in a secular state, no religious group can apply pressure of dominance. This has an
increasing effect on the right to speech.

Crossing with Religion

According to the Pew Research Center, from 2007 to 2017, government restrictions on religion –
laws, policies, and actions by state officials that restrict religious beliefs and practices – increased greatly
around the world. And social hostilities involving religion – including violence and harassment by private
individuals, organizations, or groups, have also risen since 2007.
The latest data shows that 52 governments – including some in highly populated countries like
China, Indonesia, and Russia – impose either “high” or “very high” levels of restrictions on religion, up
from 40 in 2007. And the number of countries where people are experiencing the highest levels of social
hostilities involving religion has risen from 39 to 56 over the course of the study.

Problems with Secularism

The leaders of the independent state have struggled hard to make sure the ideology of
secularism is fair. But certain problems still need to be addressed to make proper, peaceful, and fair
functioning.

State and religious groups should work self-sufficiently and remain by the law at the same time.
After some decades of independence still, political parties remain to use the agenda of religious diversity
and caste. Sometimes because of personal benefits, some politicians are refusing the motive of creating
a secular state.

Conclusion

It needs to be understood that any state cannot be truly secular with secularism just written in
its books. Thus, the complete ideology has to be recognized with grace and implemented equally to all
the people, while keeping a check on the governmental bodies for any unfair practice of religious groups
to gain power.

Hence, each individual should be careful subject to law, regardless of gender, religion, majority
or minority status, etc. So, the young generation should be trained in the ideology.
