SUBJECT CODE: EED 19
TERM: 2nd SEMESTER
DESCRIPTIVE TITLE: Teaching English In Elementary Grades Through Literature
INSTRUCTOR: Ms. Mikke Piscos

ACTIVITY
Answer the questions which will be counted towards your class participation. (15 pts)
1. As a student, what are your strategies and techniques in studying literature?
(1) Use a mix of modern design media, enhancing one against the other. Music, video
streams, short videos (such as TikTok), video games, plays, poems, film, posters,
poems, essays, novels, podcasts, and other forms of media
(2) Students should evaluate a variety of media forms for their strengths and
weaknesses, including both traditional and digital media.
(3) Plan units, tests, project-based learning, and all other tasks that students interact
with using a thematic emphasis. One of the hallmark characteristics of classic literature
is that it endures. This is due in part to the fact that the human condition is timeless.
The heart of the greatest literary works is love lost, coming of age, overcoming
challenges, civil rights, identity, and more.

2. What is the importance of teaching literature among the 21st century students?
It reminds us about life by introducing us to the lives of other people through their
stories, and through these vicarious experiences, we learn valuable lessons and
values. Literature teaches us humanity – to be sensitive and empathetic towards
others. It also gives us a place to express our feelings, opinions, and creativity. All of
these can contribute to addressing the issues that our world is currently facing, such as
rising intolerance and stress in daily life. Above all, literature teaches us language and
the power of communication, which are essential skills in the twenty-first century.
Literature is important because it allows students to respond to literature; it teaches
students about their own cultural heritage as well as those of others; it enables
students to develop emotional intelligence and knowledge; and it fosters the social
development of the student's mind.
3. Enumerate the advantages and disadvantages of studying literature to students especially
those who are experiencing the online classes/new normal way of teaching-learning processes.

B. In the box below, draw an image that best describes a special memory you hold with your mother.

Ma’am sorry I do not know

how to draw, but the best
memory that I always hold in
my heart is something like in
the picture I’ve ever treasured
because that moment is the
best day of life.

C. Read the story below and answer the questions that follow.

1. Whose image does the story center on? From what period of time in the author’s life are the
memories recalled? (5 pts.)
The plot revolves around the portrayal of a mother who is soft-hearted and overly
generous to others. The author remembered memories from earlier times when she
observed her mother cooking for others in order to satisfy their hunger. That was her
mother's misfortune of being a soft-hearted person who gets the short end of the stick.

2. What is the tone of Morsels of Memory? What words and images in the text create this tone? (5
pts.)
Morsels of Memory delves into local food production, food as a community organizing
theory, and the 20th century's oscillation between peacetime abundance and war
rationing and stockpiling.

3. What does the last line, “perhaps that was my mother’s tragedy, like the stew that was always
cooking on her stove, her nose was too soft and her heart too open,” mean?
There was Aling Nita who seemed to be always fretting about one thing or another,
that her once straight hair suddenly turned curly and white overnight Then the group of
glorious gay men working at a nearby beauty parlor who can shake our house with
their laughter. And poor little lost Ada who was always playing hide-and-seek with love,
while her sister Maya dreamed of flying to distant lands and seas where she said her
life waits for her, and I could not helpbut wonder how she can walk and talk without the
breath of life in her languid sinewy body. But they were not the only ones, there were
countless others who sat in our small mund kitchen table while my mother fed their
hunger. Perhaps that was my mother's tragedy, like the stew that was always cooking
on her.
