Construction Materials and Testing or CMT is the testing of structural materials that
are used in building structures, it can also be the testing of new materials or components
that will be added to an existing project or facility. Some examples of the structural
materials that are tested using construction materials testing are concrete, wood, masonry,
and steel. In construction materials and testing, Engineers will be able to assess the
properties of the materials that they will be using, also they will be able to know if the
materials that they are going to use in the construction are safe and can withstand certain
conditions that is appropriate and needed to their project. In building structure, it should
always be ensured that the materials to be used are secure, safe, and economically friendly.
With construction materials and testing, materials that will be used in building structures
will go through processes that will determine if they are safe and efficient to used. Also,
testing materials before using it on new and existing projects can prevent potential failures
and damages, can minimize replacements of materials, and can also avoid other possible
failure or material related problems that may occur.
Laboratory Testing and Field Testing are the processes that are conducted to
different independent construction materials. These two testing can measure the
conformance of the materials and will determine if the materials are appropriate to the
construction of the structure. Going to the process of these testing can keep the
construction of every project to run smoothly at the same time ensures the efficiency and
sustainability of the materials that will be used. However, Laboratory and Field Testing
have different ways in conducting their test and they have different focus in testing the
materials.
Field Testing is done to test materials that are to be used in the site, it is also
conducted in the site where the materials will be used or where is the development
environment of the material. The field testing of materials includes non-destructive and
destructive testing, these tests are done to complete the process of Field Testing. The data
that should be gathered in conducting the testing are compaction, moisture, air content and
other data that are evaluated through visual inspection and soil foundations or non-
destructive techniques, some of the construction materials that are tested using field
testing are soils, concrete/asphalt, steel, masonry, and timber. On the other hand,
laboratory testing is done where field testing is exploratory in nature or inconclusive or it
should have further study the sample of materials can be sent off to the laboratory to
conduct more testing. Laboratory testing includes extraction, mixing design using gyratory
and Marshall methods and gradation. Unlike field testing, conducting of laboratory testing
is usually performed on as-needed basis or if it is recommended. Some of the common
laboratory tested materials are soil, asphalt, and masonry they are tested in different ways
