Building Information Modelling: BSRIA Topic Guides TG 4/2012

This document discusses building information modeling (BIM), which involves collaborating around a 3D model of a building. BIM represents a building as computer objects containing graphical and non-graphical information. It has the power to replicate standard objects and detect clashes. There is debate around whether the 'M' in BIM stands for 'modeling' or 'management', with the view that building information needs to be both modeled and managed. BIM software provides the design environment, though BIM itself is a process. BIM can be used at different maturity levels on construction projects, from a single extended CAD package to facilitating facilities management after construction.

Review and revision of this topic guide

BIM is a very fast-moving subject at the moment. The completion of some key government
draft guidance documents in Spring 2012, as well as further developments from the supply
chain, will mean that this topic guide is likely to be revised in late Spring 2012.
