Abc Part 29

The document contains 3 physics questions about calculating magnifying power and angular magnification using the lens formula for compound microscopes. The first question calculates the magnifying power as 145x for an objective with a 2 cm focal length, eye piece with 4 cm focal length, and 40 cm tube length with the image at the near point. The second question calculates that an object should be placed 1.1 cm from a 1 cm focal length objective to have the final 25 cm image at the near point, and the angular magnification is -43.6x. The third question calculates that a small object should be placed at the objective's focal point of 0.5 cm to have the final image at infinity and minimize eye strain, and the angular

Q) A compound microscope with an objective of 2.0 cm focal length and an eye piece of
4.0 cm focal length, has a tube length of 40cm. Calculate the magnifying power of the
microscope, if the final image is formed at the near point of the eye
Solution Formula for magnification when image is formed at near point of eye
𝐿 𝐷
𝑚 = 𝑚𝑜 𝑚𝑒 = ( ) (1 + )
𝑓𝑜 𝑓𝑒
40 25
𝑚 = ( ) (1 + ) = 145

Q) A compound microscope consists of an objective of focal length 1cm and eyepiece of
focal length 5cm separated by 12.2 cm (a) At what distance from the objective should an
object should be placed to focus it properly so that the final image is formed at the least
distance of clear vision ( 25cm)? (b) Calculate the angular magnification in this case.
Solution : From lens formula
1 1 1
= +
𝑓 𝑣 𝑢
Here f = 1 cm ,; u= ue , v = - 25cm
1 1 1
= +
5 25 𝑢𝑒
Ue = -4.2 cm
VO = L - | ue| = (12.2-4.2) cm = 8 cm
From lens formula
1 1 1
= +
1 8 𝑢𝑂
UO = -1.1 cm
From formula for angular magnification =
𝑣𝑂 𝐷
𝑚 = ( ) (1 + )
𝑢𝑂 𝑓𝑒

8 25
𝑚=( ) (1 + ) = −43.6
−1.1 5
Q) The separation between the objective ( f = 0.5cm) and the eyepiece ( f = 5cm) of a
compound microscope is 7cm. Where should a small object be placed so that the eye is
least strained to see the image? Find the angular magnification produced by the
microscope
Solution: The eye will strain least if the final image is formed at infinity> In this case the
image formed by the objective shall fall at the focus of the eye piece.
Now vO = L - ve =( 7-5) cm = 2cm
From lends formula for objective lens
1 1 1
= +
𝑓 𝑣 𝑢
1 1 1
= +
0.5 2 𝑢𝑜
