7.21 Use the correct size of cable gland for each application. Follow the Gland Selection
Guidelines listed below and select gland sizes from the selection guide recommended by
the manufacturer:
Gland Sel
7.20.1 Identify the type, size and voltage rating of the cable to be used as well as the
number of cores of the cable.
7.20.2 Confirm the actual diameter of the cable over the inner sheath (under the armor
layer).
7.20.3 Confirm the actual overall diameter of the cable, over the outer sheath.
7.20.4 Confirm the size and type of the armor for the cable.
7.20.5 Check if any special environmental conditions are required to be considered,
such as installations in hazardous areas or IP rated conditions.
7.20.6 Check if accessories, such as shrouds, earth tags or locknuts are required to be
installed.
Shrouds are used to minimize the risk of dirt or other foreign substances
gathering on the cable gland body, and/or on the point of cable to gland
interface.
Earth tags are installed between the cable gland and equipment and are used to
provide an earth bond connection.
Locknuts are used to secure cable glands to a gland plate or equipment.
7.22 Tools for manipulation and termination ‘of cables shall be of a design approved by the
cable manufacturer. Corrugation of the cable armor or damage to outer sheath of the
cable will not be accepted. A wood block or wooden faced tool shall be used to finally
dress the cable into position.
723. Utilize appropriate crimping tools for splicing and termination of all cables with guides to
position the connectors or lugs in the tool correctly. The connectors, lugs and associated
dies for the compression tool shall be of correct type and size. The crimping tool shall be

designed with steps to prevent over crimping and shall be of a type which has the
provision to prevent the tool from opening until the crimp action is completed
7.24 When more than one cable are to be terminated at particular items of equipment special
care should be taken to ensure that all cables to that equipment are routed from 2
common direction and that each cable is terminated in an orderly and symmetrical
fashion.
725 Each and every cable shall be permanently identified at each end by its cable number as
noted within the schedules. The identification label shall be of adequate size and style
and shall be securely fixed to its relative cable.
7.26 _ Sufficient spare cable shall be allowed to remake the joint or termination.
7.27 Joints shall be made core-to-core.
7.28 Above ground cable joints and terminations shall be accessible.
CABLE GLAND INSTALLATION
7.29 Mark on gland plate and carefully drill the hole required to accept the cable gland.
730 Remove the outer sheath of the cable to required length. Provide excess free cable
conductor end length, permitting neat training of conductors to terminal bus bars. Cut off
cable armor but maintain inner sheath in place.
731. Route cable through the gland shroud and the main gland body. Secure gland body on
gland plate with the use of the locknut provided. Install earth tag in the process, as well
7.32 For the installation of the NYLON weatherproof gland for CPC's confirm the moisture seal
is fitted properly and the cover nut is firmly secured in place.
733 Earth tags shall be installed within the cable termination/panel cubicle. They shall be
looped together and bonded to the main earth bar of the equipment through an earth tal
not smaller than 2.5mm? in size.
734 Determine the exact length of cable cores required for the termination. Remove inner
cable sheath.

shall be connected to spare terminals.
738 Crimp terminal lugs on all cable cores and CPC's.
7.39 Terminal lugs, ferrules and bare portions of cable core resulting from a jointing or
termination process shall be insulated with an approved type of insulating tape or heat
shrinkable tubing after completion of process. Such insulating tape or heat shrinkable
tubing shall have equal or better electrical and mechanical properties than those of the
original insulation removed, and shall be adhered to the cores etc. securely and
