Differences and similarities of Social Science and Social Studies

Social studies from the word itself are study social science and humanities integration that the main
purpose is to provide effective decisions of people through citizen and in democratic society. These
social studies is delivered through school-based program and through school curriculum medium with
such subjects or disciplines to be imparted such as culture, geography, sociology and other contents
also. On the other hand, social science is a subject or also known as scientific discipline that focuses on
the interactions of people within a society and their relationships as well as linkages to one another. It is
instructed through higher curriculum programs such as college or university level. The two areas were
differentiated only through their intended purposes where social studies is for school-based levels to
promote effective citizenship of people while social science is for interrelationships of people and their
activity in a society. For their similarities, one point of their similarity is that both areas are concerned
between the people and society. Moreover, they have distinct similarity and interaction because since
they are both dealing people and social relationships, the knowledge that have been build up from the
social studies in school levels were improved and given a product into social science subject that is
available into higher curriculum like in college. The knowledge and values that is learned in such
academic disciplines under social studies are later on into applying those knowledge into scientific
methods and standards such researches, journals and more.

Prove that araling panlipunan is an integrated subject. cite atleast 3 evidences.

Araling Panlipunan or Social studies is an integrated subject because since the subject itself is linked into
culture, civic and geography, this means that the subjects that is taught academically doesn’t only
guarantee into learnings and knowledge gained from school rather applied and connected into real-life
contexts to reach reality of people and social interrelationships in a nation. As cited by Kovalik and Olsen
(1994), it demonstrates that integration refers to reflect in the independent real world and involves the
learner’s body, feelings, senses, and intuition in learning experience. This means that Araling Panlipunan
is an integrated subject in a manner that the learnings and knowledges from a book or any academic
context is critically analyzed and connected to social issues and concerns such as the political presidents,
tribal cultures that is slowly improving and merging into 21 st century generation and more. Second
evidence was cited by Berns and Erickson (2001) that there is a desired outcome for Araling Panlipunan
towards student’s interest and performances through an approach called contextual teaching and
learning (CTL) that merges classroom taught subjects unto real world situations. This means that it
should be catered into contextualized education through creating a substantial relationship between
classroom and academic curriculum and outside social world and environment. One example of this is
when a lesson subject in Grade 2, “Ang Aking Komunidad Noon at Ngayon” since it is about the features
of a certain community it should be contextualized into own community setting of a child, for example
the community where the learner belong to the place in General Santos City, then the features should
be contextualized into their own setting such as the location, events, delicacies and more. Thirdly,
Tejada (2020) cited that Araling Panlipunan as an integrated subject requires an engaging and active
learning yet meaningful or known as the heads-on, hearts-on and hands-on approach where students
should be actively engaging their selves to work individually or in peer group. Learners effectively
interact to teachers through acquiring knowledge and skills (minds-on), gaining importance of the
subject area being thought (hearts-on) and especially applying the acquired knowledge and skills into
hands-on activities and strategies (hands-on) to make Araling Panlipunan engaging and appealing to be
learned effectively by the learners.
