Procedure For Magnetic Particle Examination 1.0 SCOPE
Procedure For Magnetic Particle Examination 1.0 SCOPE
1.0 SCOPE:
1.1 This procedure is applicable for magnetic particle examination of full penetration
carbon steel weldments joints of 4” min and 24” max diameter pipe to weldolet joints.
1.2 This procedure covers magnetic particle examination by wet non-fluorescent
method and acceptance standard, which shall be followed whenever this procedure is
specified.
1.3 All ferromagnetic materials and weldments of any shape or size shall be examine
for 100% of their area unless otherwise specified
3.0 EQIPPMENT:-
2.1 Magnaflux make electromagnetic yoke model Y7 or Equivalent. Meeting the
requirement of para 2.2, 2.3 and 2.4 shall be used
2.2 Electromagnetic yoke in ac and dc mode shall be able to lift a ferromagnetic block
having min. weight of 4.5 kg and 18.5 kg respectively. at the max. pole spacing to be
used.the block should be dully identified with weight measure and recorded
2.3 the block shall be lifted in such a way that its centre of gravity falls in centre of
the pole spacing. the pole spacing shall be max, with the full surface of the legs in
contact with the material.Yoke is acceptable. if the ferromagnetic block is lifted
freely against gravitational force
2.4 Yoke shall be calibrated once in every year or earlier if malfunction or damage
is suspected.
4. FEROMAGNETIC PARTICLES
4.1 Magnaflux make wet non-fluorescent particle with direct spray cane shall be used as
required mentioned colour-

5. SURFACE PREPARATION
Surface may be in the as welded condition; however surface preparation by grinding or other suitable
means may be necessary in case of doubt to resolve the actual indication. surface to be examined and all
adjutant area within atleast 25.4mm shall be dry and free of all dirt ,grease, lint, scale, welding flux and
spatter, oil or other extraneous matter tat could interfere with the examination.
6. METHOD OF EXAMINATION
6.1 Only HWDC shall be used unless otherwise specified. always the full magnetic field
intensity available from the equipment shall be used, unless otherwise stated.
6.2 Examination shall be done by the continuous method
6.3 The particle medium shall be applied on the job surface uniformaly by spry can by
maintaining sufficiently longer distance. The temperature of the job surface shall not
more than 213deg. F or as per the temperature range limitation set by the particle
manufacturer.
6.4 A minimum intensity of light shall be 100 fc (1000 lux.) shall be maintained during
examination and evaluation.
6.5 All area to be examined shall be magnetized in two perpendicular direction with a
minimum overlap of 10% of pole spacing.
6.6 The pole spacing as measure along the surface of the component being tested, shall
not be more than used during 6” and less than 3”.
6.7 The inspection medium once applied on the job shall not be used.
10.0 DEMAGNETISATION
10.1 This is generally not required to be done. If required ,the testing personnel shall get
a separate procedure for demagnetization
13.0 REPORTING
13.0 Reporting shall contain all information of calibration, testing, evaluation and required
recording documents with identification.
