CHAPTER I

This chapter presents the background of the study,

statement of the problem, hypotheses, theoretical framework,
scope and limitation, significance of the study and definition
of terms.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Education is the bedrock of the society. Through education,

knowledge can be attained formally and informally. Formal
education through school occupies the large chunk of the
learning process of any country.

Educational institutions provide the true sets of learning.

The students, who are really anxious to learn, can develop
healthy habits in school and reinforce the early formation
practices which have been started in their homes. In school they
are taught how to move accordingly in the society, how to
behave, how to interact with others, and how to progress in
life.

Since October 1960 up to now, the Libertad National

Vocational School have created and made its name and recognized
in Division of Antique, being one of the Centre of Excellence
academic institutions. This is due to the continuously
improving outstanding performance of both the teachers and
students. Consequently, LNVS is developing skilled and top
performing students, thus, producing highly competitive
graduates.

The school is an integral part of every learner’s life. It

helps in forming the foundation of the child’s future. Hence,
school turns out to be microcosm of the real life wherein one
laughs, cries, forgives and forgets, reacts, interacts, learns,
teaches, observes, takes risks, transforms and finally evolves
into a full-fledged individual ready to step out into the real
complex world.

With the aforementioned observation, the researchers are

motivated to conduct a study about the Tracking Study of
Professional Graduates of Libertad National Vocational School
from 1990-2014.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The overall objective of this descriptive study is to track

the professionals who graduated from the Libertad National
Vocational School from year 1990-2014.

This study aims to answer the following problem:

1. What is the total number of graduates in Libertad

National Vocational School from year 1990-2014?
2. What are the total number of professional graduates in
the following fields such as Medical Field,
Engineering Field, Local Government Unit Employees,
Business Industry, Uniformed Personnel and Teaching
Field?
3. What profession has the highest number of employment?

3
Libertad National Vocational School
Libertad, Antique

Senior High School Department

HYPOTHESES

Based on the problems stated, the researchers present the

following hypotheses:

H1. For the number of graduates, the total population is

around 3,000-4,000.

H2. For the total number of professional graduates based on

their current jobs, the highest total of employment will be
either on the teaching field or engineering field and the
lowest will be either on the medical field or in the business
industry.

H3. For the total number of employment, teaching field has the
highest total.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

According to Yorke and Knight (2004) employability is seen

to be influenced, amongst other things by students’ self-
efficacy beliefs, students’ self-theories and personal
qualities. They highlight that what is of critical importance is
the extent to which students feel that they can “make a
difference”. This, importantly not only broadens the focus to
include a wider range of attributes required to manage one’s
career development in ways that will sustain one’s
employability.

It’s important to identify the significance of self-

efficacy in influencing career intentions since the level of

4
Libertad National Vocational School
Libertad, Antique

Senior High School Department

self-belief which individuals have in their ability to be

successful in the quest of a particular career is likely to
control which path is chosen. Individuals will require higher
levels of self-efficacy if they are to select a route which is
perceived as difficult, challenging or non-traditional.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents the views, ideas, and judgments of

various authorities and experts which have bearing on the
present study. Furthermore, studies conducted here and abroad
were also included in this chapter.

Tracking the Alumni of the Graduate School in a Philippine

Higher Education Institution

Graduate education is at the apex of the educational

system. In the field of education, graduate studies are one of

the more effective means of improving the capabilities of

education professionals who aim to contribute the continued

improvement of teaching and learning in the classrooms, delivery

of student services, and management of educational programs.

Graduate education is also one of the most effective means of

developing capabilities related to doing research that will

improve educational theory and practice in the many different

aspects of the educational process [1]. Tracer research is an

approach which is widely used in most organizations especially

in educational institution to track and to keep record of

students once they have graduated from the institution. It is a

8
Libertad National Vocational School
Libertad, Antique

Senior High School Department

way of understanding the relevance and quality of programs

offered by universities as well as the labor market. It

constitutes an important tool for educational planners, as they

can provide valuable information for evaluating the results of

the higher education and trainings institutions. This

information may be used for minimizing any possible deficits in

a given educational program in terms of content, delivery and

relevance and for further development of the institution in the

context of quality assurance. Tracer study will benefit every

institution because it will help them know what the status of

their products. Through tracer study, an institution is able to

evaluate the quality of education given to their graduates by

knowing the graduate’s placements and positions in the society

after garnering their master’s degree which later can be used as

a benchmark in producing more qualified and competitive

graduates [2]. Tracer study results could help assess the

usefulness of the programs as well as their effectiveness, and

eventually success or failure. In fact, Tracer study are

required in seeking accreditation of curricular programs from

accrediting bodies like the Accrediting Agency of Chartered

Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (AACCUP) for State

Universities and Colleges [3]. The ten (10) key areas to be

9
Libertad National Vocational School
Libertad, Antique

Senior High School Department

evaluated for accreditation are considered in this study.

Another salient objective of this research is to lay out the

skills they have acquired from the Graduate School that are most

useful in their position or jobs in particular. Graduate

school curricular offering considers various vital skills needed

in most jobs.

THE HISTORY OF LNVS

A seed is planted in the mind of the leader. That seed is

to have a secondary school to address the needs of his

constituents for he believed that through education, the lives

of Libertadnons will be uplifted.

The Libertad National Vocational School eventually took its

roots on October 24, 1960. This was made possible through the

leadership of the late Ex- Mayor Primitivo B. Garmillos, Sr.

who is known as the “father of the school”. During his term as

the Municipal Mayor, he made efforts and negotiations so that by

virtue of Republic Act 2390 sponsored by Congressman Tobias

Fornier, a vocational school in the Municipality of Libertad was

created.

10
Libertad National Vocational School
Libertad, Antique

Senior High School Department

The seed sprouted in a one- hectare land which was

originally owned by Juana Bellacorza who married Deogracias

Unilongo. The couple bore two children namely Gregorio and

Narcisa. The latter married Pedro Surilla and had 4 siblings

namely: Bonifacio, Victoria, Rizalino and Antipas who inherited

the lot. The late Mayor Primitivo B. Garmillos was married to

Antipas who convinced the siblings to donate the site of the

school. Through “dagyaw system” ( Bayanihan) of the parents,

the construction of the makeshift classrooms made of “ solidap”

( woven coconut leaves) as walls and roofs and bamboo as posts

was undertaken. Seventy- five students in the locality and

neighboring towns of Buruanga, Pandan and Sebaste enrolled and

made use of the makeshift rooms.

The seed was carefully nurtured by the first Principal ,

the late Mr. Julian Bongcas together with the pioneer teachers

namely; Mrs. Rosario Tamano, Mr. Abraham Abancio and Mrs.

Ofelia Cabrillos Asuncion who later became the Head of the

Related Subjects Department in 1979 until her retirement in

1999. Mr. Agaton P. Asuncion joined the teaching staff months

later in that first school year.

11
Libertad National Vocational School
Libertad, Antique

Senior High School Department

The seed after four years of cultivating, bore its first

fruit in 1964 when 27 graduates marched on stage and received

the diploma. From then on, the school’s population steadily

increased. More teachers and employees were hired and permanent

buildings were constructed. Through the concerted efforts of

the PTEA and other stakeholders, additional lots were purchased.

The mentors, Mr. Romulo Magsipoc became the first Head of the

Related Subjects Department and Mr. Ambrocio Alagos as Head of

the Vocational Department.

The seed blossomed into a young tree with many branches… In

1973, a two- year Trade Technical Curriculum was offered with

Mr. Tomas V. Osunero as the Administrator. The curriculum was

designed to develop and train manpower for the country’s

developing industries. It offered courses in Garment, Trades and

Automotive Technology, and later, additional courses were added;

Food Technology, Civil Technology, Fishery Technology and

Electronics. Some of the teachers in LNVS today were graduates

of Trade- Technical Curriculum. The Head Teachers who ably

supported the Vocational Administrator were Mr. Agaton P.

Asuncion for Vocational Department and his wife, the late Mrs.

Ofelia C. Asuncion for Related Subjects Department.

12
Libertad National Vocational School

Senior High School Department

The seed became a sturdy tree and bore many fruits. Through

the leadership of Mr. Agaton P. Asuncion as Vocational

Administrator from 1976 until his retirement in 2000, the

administration had embarked on school buildings and other

facilities construction programs to provide adequate and

conducive learning environment to its clienteles. With

Mr.Isaias S. Condez , Head of the Vocational Department, the

school procured tools and equipment for different vocational

courses thereby producing skilled workers. Mrs. Patricia S.

Cordero as Head of Related Subjects Department from 1999 to

August 2009 supervised the academic side and assisted in the

development of the sports, cultural and journalistic skills of

the students. Before Mr. Asuncion’s retirement, a separate

library was built. Through the efforts of the officers of Book

Lovers Club and its adviser, Mrs. Lucia U. Ambubuyog the library

has acquired through fund raising, audio visual materials like

TV set, VCD player, educational films, computers, LCD and

overhead projector. Mr. Isaias S. Condez was designated as

Officer- in Charge of the school and later promoted as

Vocational School Administrator. Mr. Homer A. Maglantay was

designated as in- charge of the Vocational Department and was

replaced by Mr. Gaspar T. Artus when he was promoted to Head

13
Libertad National Vocational School
Libertad, Antique

Senior High School Department

Teacher III and at the same time Head of the Vocational

Department. The seed had been shaken momentarily when its

technical courses had to be scrapped due to lack of funding but

it emerged victorious when its fruits qualified and produced a

winner in the national competition in journalism and qualified

for National Technolympics. Upon Mr. Condez’ retirement in

January 2005, Mrs. Helen O. Demerin, Master Teacher II assumed

as Officer – in- Charge of the school for four months.

The seed sheltered some nests who became productive. On May

2005, the Division Office assigned Mrs. Cristita O. Alonsagay as

Principal II of LNVS until January 2012. Mr. Gaspar T. Artus,

Head Teacher IV remained as Head of the Vocational Department

until his retirement on January 6, 2014. Ms. Ernelina S.

Gilvas, a dynamic teacher and an alumna was installed as Head

teacher III and Head of the Related Subjects Department in 2009

upon Mrs. Cordero’s retirement. In preparation for the school’s

Golden Jubilee, the alumni and other stakeholders were tapped

and the construction of perimeter fence by class was done

although it remains unfinished until now. Construction of 5

classrooms and Computer Laboratory with 50 computers

materialized thereby providing facilities for the growing

14

Senior High School Department

populace. From February to May 2012, as Head Teacher III, Ms.

Ernelina S. Gilvas was appointed Officer-in- Charge of the

school. On the second week of May, the Division Office sent a

new Principal; Mr. Albert Q. Enopiques, an active and very

supportive School Head. During his term, LNVS soared high in the

cluster, division and in the region through its involvement in

the different contests the school had joined. Meanwhile, the

construction of Cosmetology building and two- storey building

with 4 classrooms made the school an ideal venue as it hosted

provincial, cluster and district events. Mr. Edgar N. Estoya

acted as Officer- in- Charge of the Technical Vocational

Department when the position was vacated and later promoted as

Head Teacher III of the TVE Department. Indeed, the school had

provided a good training ground for its two leaders for at the

end of School Year 2014- 2015, Mr. Albert Q. Enopiques

transferred to another school for career advancement and

professional growth as Principal III and Mr. Edgar N. Estoya as

Principal I.

The seed is blessed and further enriched by the coming of a

competent leader. Ms. Leah E. Noblezada, Principal II assumed

her post on June 18, 2015 while Mr. Albert Fred S. Maluyan as

15
Libertad National Vocational School
Libertad, Antique

Senior High School Department

Head Teacher III filled in the office of the Technical

Vocational Department on July 23, 2015. His stay in LNVS was

cut short because of his promotion as Principal I. At this

particular moment, the Division office acknowledged LNVS as the

Regional Champion in Journalism when three of its writers

qualified for the National Schools Press Conference.

The seed today at 56 has ripened for it is one of the

Centers of Excellence in the division and it is committed to

face the challenges of the changing times. The gigantic tasks

ahead become achievable with the promotion on June 10, 2016 of

Mr. Dony F. Artucilla as Head Teacher III and Head of the

Technical Vocational Department. With the leadership of three

formidable single heads- Ma’am Leah, Ma’am Nelin and Sir Dony,

the seeds that have been scattered and its branches extended are

now moving in the realization of its goals as the school

integrates the Senior High School Curriculum of the K to 12

Program. The school now offers Business Math & Principles of

Marketing (ABM); Travel Services (TVL) for Academic Strand. For

Technical & Livelihood Strand; it offers Cookery NCII, Fashion

Design Apparel NCIII, Hairdressing NCIII, and Electrical

Installation & Maintenance NCII. LNVS is now undergoing a series

16

of changes as it embarks in the construction of buildings and

procurement of tools and equipment to enhance and upgrade its

facilities. With 60 strong members of the faculty- 43 teachers

and 17 non- teaching personnel including the School Head and two

Head Teachers and the support and generosity of the

stakeholders, LNVS will surpass all the obstacles it encounters…

The seed in its journey for more than five decades,

although its cycle completed, begins another sojourn. As it is,

it needs constant nurturing and this can be achieved if the

fruits- the ALUMNI, the stakeholders, parents and mentors work

hand in hand in attaining its vision and accomplishing its

mission. (Pagapulan, 2016)

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Introduction

The section for methodology illustrates research approach

and design for the current study. It has been noted as an

endeavour towards the process of elucidating as well as

justifying apt mode of the research design in terms of

apprehending the problem of research.

As it is indicated on the title, this chapter includes the

research methodology of the said tracking study. In more

details, in this part the researcher outlines the research

design, population of the study, sampling technique, data

gathering procedure, and the data analysis.

Research Design

Research design has been explored under diversified

definitions.

In respect on this study, research design will be

considered as a blueprint or framework with determined

procedures towards the collection and analysis of collected

20
Libertad National Vocational School
Libertad, Antique

Senior High School Department

valid data as attained from the different respondents. The

motive is to identify or rather create a conclusion towards the

respective research problem. The aim is to get the common

professions at the present of the students graduated in Libertad

National Vocational School from the year 1990- 2014.

This section aims to discuss the kind of research design

the researcher used in this study. The researchers used the

descriptive design, which concerns gathering data from a huge

number of respondents. A descriptive design of research concerns

data gathering from a specific population which is neither

manipulated nor experimented on. It was selected by the

researchers because the study comprises of a huge number of

respondents. This method consists of using a questionnaire,

which had undergone series of test for validation and

verification from several research advisers.

According to Kothari (2005) descriptive approach

illustrates the ideologies of population. It never stands as any

literary or poetic approach yet offers concrete and concise

illustration about originality. Some of the collected data are

quantitative in nature and are validated through numbers and

percentages, while others are qualitative with why and how

21
Libertad National Vocational School
Libertad, Antique

Senior High School Department

elements. Kumar (2005) states that descriptive design can assist

the researchers in creating data about similar population.

Descriptive research design tries to illustrate systematically

structured instance, phenomenon, problem, service or data

related to living conditions meant for the community or to

illustrate attitudes for the same. The process of descriptive

research design is liable to generate perfect comprehensiveness

about the selected inquiry groups and thereby can establish

interrelationships among notable variables.

This research makes use of descriptive design as it

analysis in detail the various job or professions at the present

of the LNVS graduates.

Population of the Study

The target population for this research define to include

all the student graduates of Libertad National Vocational School

from the class year 1990-2014, while the accessible population

is those alumni whose job are based in, in the Municipality of

Libertad, since these are the student graduates who are within

the researcher’s reach.

Sampling Procedure/ Technique

The method of purposive-convenience sampling was used to

develop the sample of the research under discussion. According

to this method, which belongs to the category of non-

probability sampling techniques, sample members are selected on

the basis of their knowledge and relationship regarding to the

study (Freedman et al., 2007). In the current study, the sample

members who were selected had a special relationship about the

research topic. Within this context, the participants of this

study are the 200 graduates of LNVS from year 1990-2014.

Data Gathering Procedure

For the purpose of the research study, both the primary and

secondary data have been collected. The researchers collected

the data through the questionnaires administered to the alumni

of LNVS from year 1990-2014 and was conducted during the 55th

Alumni Homecoming, October 25, 2019.

Secondary data has been collected from the internet

specifically the social media like Facebook and Messenger. This

was done so the researcher could gather the needed remaining

23
Libertad National Vocational School
Libertad, Antique

Senior High School Department

data from the student graduates who did not attend the Alumni

Homecoming.

Instrument for Data Collection

The researcher designed an interview schedule as one of the

data collection instrument for this study. As far as data

collection tools were concerned, the conduct of the research

involved the use of structured questionnaire, which was used as

an interview guide for the researcher. The former students of

LNVS who graduated from year 1990-2014 were interviewed followed

by answering the questionnaire.

Software Tool Used

The following tool is used to 25 analyse the primary data

collected and test the proposed research hypothesis.

Microsoft Excel 2007. To produce graphs for the calculated

percentages from the gathered primary data Microsoft Excel 2007

is used.

Statistical Tools Employed

The statistical tools that are used for the analysis of the

primary data are given below:

 Graphical Method

 Simple percentage method

Graphical Method. After the survey, the gathered data are

organized, examined and displayed by using different graphical

techniques. There are several graphical representation forms

such as bar charts, histograms, and pie charts.

Simple Percentage Analysis. The analysis of simple percentage is

used in comparing between more than two collections of data. In

this method the percentage are used to represent relationship

25
Libertad National Vocational School

Senior High School Department

between the total numbers of the graduates and to their present

professions/job.

Data Analysis

The data collected from the field were analyzed, in this

part, the researchers will construct a table for the gathered

data. A main advantage of data tabulation is that it helps in

data collected being organized and simplified, at the same time

producing results that may then measure using quantitative

techniques. Then the coding system will soon follow, this will

be used for easy distribution or coding of the data to its

corresponding variable.

CHAPTER V

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

The following chapter concludes this report. A

summary of the research is presented, and findings of the study

are discussed and interpreted. Recommendations for further

research end the chapter.

CONCLUSIONS

Through the study and data presented, the

researchers concluded that the total number of graduates in

Libertad National Vocational School from 1990-2014 (not

including 2016-2017 due to K-12 Program) was 3,128. The majority

of professional graduates were in Technical Course since the

LNVS offered 2-year technical course after 4-year education and

aligned with the curriculum of Technical Vocational and

Livelihood Track.

The highest number in employment is the teaching profession

because during those years it was one of the most in demand job

specifically in the year of 2010-2014. Furthermore, national

figure showed that there were 64,000 teachers who were employed

in the same period of 2010-2014. Moreover, some of those

39
Libertad National Vocational School
Libertad, Antique

Senior High School Department

teachers were already promoted as Supervisors, School Heads and

Principals.

Furthermore, most of the chosen schools in college

were located within the Region VI, due to numerous known and

successful university/colleges present particularly in Iloilo

and Aklan. The result showed that most of the professional

graduates were female; this revealed that the females were more

dedicated to pursue their professions than males.

In addition, the result from every questionnaire varies

dependent upon with the respondent who answered it.

RECOMMENDATIONS

After a thorough analysis of data, the following recommendations

are hereby made. Accordingly, the researchers recommend:

 This research study will be presented during the 2020

Alumni Homecoming in order for the LNVS graduates to know

the trend after the graduation in high school and the

most common job that the alumni are engaged at present.

 The next future researchers may use this paper as basis

for their researches regarding the tracking of students

of LNVS and for other purposes.

 The students of LNVS should take seriously their chosen

Technical-Vocational course wherein it is very useful

when they reach college or when they seek for jobs.

 The students of LNVS are highly encouraged to pursue what

are their specialized courses taken in High school.

 The teachers and students should cooperate for the

betterment and success of the students’ performance in

academics and chosen fields/career later on.

 It is encouraged that there should be a continuity of

this study to complete the data of LNVS Alumni.
