Week 4 Thursday
Week 4 Thursday
1. Decide if the following statements are true or false. Explain your answer. If false, give a rule that relates to it that is
true, and try to find a counter example. Ignore any values of the variables for which any term is undefined.
log A
• is the same as log A − log B.
log B
• ln A − ln B = ln(A − B)
• loga (aa ) = a
• The quantities log2 (1) and log3 (1) are the same.
• The range of log2 (x) and log3 (x) are the same.

4. Find the domain of the following functions.
f (x) = ln(2x − 3) g(x) = log(x2 + 1)

6. One of your friends is taking another math course and tells you, “ I have no idea what an expression like log4 (20) really
means.” But you do! Write a few sentences explaining, in words, what this means. Then, tell how you can approximate
its answer without using a calculator. Hint: think about numbers above and below 20 that you can find the exact
answer to.
7. One of your friends is taking another math course and says, “I know that the expression log3 (0) is undefined, because
for any expression of the form loga (x), x cant be 0 and it cant be negative, but I have no idea WHY this is true.” But
you do! Write down an explanation for your friend. Remember the definition of a log and go from there.
8. Use properties of logs to expand the expression. You may assume the x is within the domain of the function.
