“Libido” program

A. Rationale
As a country with a culture of being “mahinhin”, sexuality have been always a sensitive issue
that garners controversies. In the case of the youth, Filipino boys immaturely think that this is a
testament of strength and courage while Filipino girls were judged whether they are being
“pokpok” (dirty or pervert) or “malandi” (flirt). However, the Filipino youths were seen to
become more enganging now-a-days. According to Athira Nortajuddin (2021), Philippines have
been going to a teenage pregnancy crisis. The United Nation Population Fund even declared in
the year 2016 that the country has the highest teenage pregnancy cases in Asia. (Retrieved from
https://theaseanpost.com/). In fact, the CNN Philippines even warned that this cases have been
increasing every year. (Retrieved from https://cnnphilippines.com/). Furthermore, the
Department of Health of the Philippines also report a growing case of HIV/AIDS in the country.
This disease was studied and observed to be rampant in the adolescents. (Retrieved from
https://doh.gov.ph/). As we can see, it is a high time to discuss and improve sexuality in the
minds of Filipino, especially for teenagers.
The key to the predicament is to understand Sexuality and Sexual- Self. Sexuality isn’t about
the act itself and the frequency it is made, but is defined as the intimate thoughts and emotions
a person have towards another person. (Retrieved from https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/).
These feelings and ideas are needed to be interpreted so that we may fully understand our very
own self. People should know that these sexual urges are innate to every creature. Biologically,
we were inclined to reproduce. Thus, this is a matter of control. (Retrieved from
https://utsged101portfolio.wordpress.com/). By having sexual intercourse, we let our libido
drives us due to the intoxicating feeling it brought. Sadly, there are a lot of consequences comes
with it. It is already shown above that unplanned pregnancy and STD being acquired can happen.
This is where Sexual-self comes in and developing it becomes important.
There a lot of positive effects in being aware and developing one’s Sexual-self. Aside from
avoiding the problems stated above, an aware person may know fully well and accept what are
his/her gender preferences. By understanding who really the person is attracted to, they may
also understand their own emotions and actions. This could also change the decisions they
make. (Alexandra Solomon, 2020). Pychologist Grant Hilary Brenner (2017), also said that Sexual-
self affects our relationship patterns. In addition, on the idea of sexual education, a lot of study
discusses positive result with regard to sexual-self-awareness. Breakwell and Millward (1997),
presented a negative correlation between sexual-self-awareness and sexual risk-taking.
Moreover, a journal by nursing researchers in Taiwan concluded that Sexual-self-awareness
lowers that engagement of young girls in doing intercourse. Lastly, Larain Writer (1988), said
that the discussion of sexual-self-concept encourages the use of contraceptive and family
planning.
With regards to all of this, the proponent would create a program to raise Sexual-self-
awareness. The program would discuss sexual health that would encompass from issues up to
sexual education and development.
