Upon seeing the sculpture made by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, I was deeply enthralled by
it. Although I have not seen this work by Bernini’s before, I immediately assumed
that it must be one of his most famous sculptures. I could not exactly recognize from
which period it belongs but, I expected that it was from a long time ago. There was
something about it that made me feel intrigued. As I looked at it more carefully, I
started to gain interest in the different aspects that contribute to the creation of this
sculpture.
Based on my research, ‘The Ecstasy of Saint Therese’ was a part of the Baroque
movement. It was commissioned by Cardinal Federico Cornaro of Venice in 1647.
This religious sculpture reveals the spiritual vision of Saint Therese of Avila’s about
an angel. This creation was one of Bernini’s notable works due to its technicality and
beauty which satisfies people by just simply looking at it.
This creation is very detailed making it look more realistic. At first, it gave me a big
impression on the artwork’s structural aspect more than what it meant. But as I gave
it a closer look, I started to get curious as to what was the reason behind this work of
Bernini’s. As shown from the photo of the sculpture, St. Therese can be seen as
almost as if she’s experiencing intense pain. While on the left, an angel can be seen
smiling at St. Therese. The angel was also holding an arrow on his right hand. For its
background, I noticed that there were rays of light in gold. All of these were the most
visible elements which I believe imparts meaning.
Bernini’s intelligent technique can be seen throughout the structure of the sculpture.
The contrast between the clothing of Saint Therese and the angel were caused by
the textures and weights of it. Similarly, these draped clothing helped emphasize the
subjects and their movement. It evokes an action that shows what occurred during
one of St. Therese’s vision. Also, the use of proportion was well done. It seemed like
the artist knows how to blend each aspect forming a composition. The ingenious
portraying of drama with the help of these elements and principles resulted in a
harmonized artwork.
Bernini imitated St. Therese’s vision of an angel engaging spiritual experience for the
audience. This work of art is highly associated with faith. Through his expressive
manner shown on this sculpture, intense feelings became evident and it delivered
spiritual experience. He created art that was impactful and meaningful enough. It is
no wonder that he was one of the notable artists of the Baroque movement. His
intelligence on his craft led him to create a masterpiece that will continue to influence
people and perhaps, the future of art.
