Module 7: CONSTRUCTING AND REPAIR OF SIMPLE ELECTRICAL GADGETS
Name : ______________________________________ Section: __________________
LESSON 1: Tools and Materials Needed in Making Simple Electrical Gadgets
Tools and other materials are very important for making and troubleshooting electrical gadgets.
The following are some of the basic tools and materials used in making simple electrical gadgets:

1. Pliers, such as long nose and side- cutting pliers, are used to hold, bend, cut, and twist objects and wires.

2. Screwdrivers, such as flat-head and Phillips-head screwdrivers, are used to drive and remove screws.

3. Wire stripper is used to remove insulation of wires from gauge.

4. Hammer is used to pull and drive out nails.

5. Electric Drill is used to drift holes on hand materials.

6. Soldering Tools, such as soldering gun and soldering iron, are used to make splices and tap connections of wires.

7. Cables and wires are the common materials needed in making electrical.

8. Electrical Tape is used to protect electric wiring for insulation.

9. Male Plug is a device inserted in a socket to make an electrical connection.

Lesson 2: Simple Electrical Gadgets and their Uses

Anyone who is interested to construct simple electrical devices may find it challenging and worth the effort and
experience. Reading about electricity and electrical gadgets on magazines, books, and the internet may help you to
construct these cool gadgets. Learning the skills is beneficial as it prepares you to explore, discover, make things, and
be globally competitive.

Below are some examples of electrical gadgets you may find interesting and easy to construct with their uses:
1. An extension cord is an electrical gadget that is longer than an ordinary cord. It has a male plug at one end and a
receptacle at the other. It is used to accommodate extra electrical devices needing electric supply.

2. A lampshade is a type of fixture that covers a light bulb to diffuse emitted light. This is usually placed in the living
room or bedroom.

3. A doorbell is a device usually placed at the door that gives off a reverberating sound when turned on.

Lesson 3: Safety and Health Practices in Making Gadgets

Many accidents happen at work involving electric shocks and burns. Faulty electrical wirings can also lead to fires,
injuries and must worst, loss of life, equipment, and property. This lesson will give you information on how to reduce
the risk and some reminders on basic electrical safety and more secured working practices.

Here are some safety rules to follow:

-Never run in the shop to avoid slipping, falling, or bumping into others who are working with sharp tools.
-Wear face shield, goggles, or safety glasses while working.
-Never hold a project in your fingers. Use clamp, drill press vise, or pliers to hold it.
-Do not attempt to operate a machine or gadget if you do not know how to use it properly. Ask help or assistance
from your parents or teacher.
-Report untoward incidents like accident or injury to the proper authority.
-All electrical equipment and installations must be checked and maintained always to prevent accident.
-Provide enough sockets-outlets for equipment in use and avoid overloading them to prevent fire.
-Provide an accessible switch with emergency OFF button near a fixed equipment to cut off power in an emergency.
-Keep all cords away from areas where water is present.
-Make it a habit to turn off electric gadgets and equipment when not in use.
-Never allow electric wires to run under carpets where they cannot be seen because of tripping hazards.
-Pull the plug and not the cord from an outlet.
-Make sure to work in a well-lighted area.
-Use gloves and appropriate safety footwear when using electric tools.
-Keep cords away from heat, oil, and sharp edges.

LET’S REMEMBER
Tools and materials in making simple gadgets must be identified to understand their functions better.
Always observe strictly safety and health practices while at work.
Use appropriate tools, materials, and PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) while working.
Make sure that tools and equipment are kept clean, properly maintained, and stored in a safe place.

Lesson 4: Learning how to Repair Simple Gadgets and Furniture

Repairing and maintaining what you have frees up money for more rewarding things, and makes you happier in both
the long and short term. Repairing is itself an experience, one you can look back on with satisfaction, and likely some
pride.

Repairing Simple Gadgets

Worn out wire – to repair a worn out wire remove the plug of the appliance out of the electrical outlet or socket. Cut
out the worn out part and scrape the outer covering of both ends by about half an inch. Connect the two lines by
twisting them together then cover the twisted wires with electrical tape.
Worn out plug- take off the pluf out of the cord or cut the wire. Separate the cord and scrape the insulation or
covering by about half an inch. Open the new plug and attach each end of the cord to each pole of the plug. Twist the
wire in a clockwise direction and secure it with screw.

Repairing furniture/furnishings
There are 4 basic repairs of furniture or furnishings that we can do at home or school.
1. How to loosen sticking drawers or cabinets
Rub paraffin on the meeting parts of drawers to keep them working smoothly. You'll find paraffin with the canning
supplies in your local grocery store. In a pinch you can also use candles, bar soap or even dry spray lubricant.
2. Removing stains from wood furniture
-Apply non-gel toothpaste to a soft cloth and rub it into the water ring. Then, wipe clean with a damp cloth.
-Make a homemade paste with equal parts water and baking soda. Rub the stain in circular motions until it disappears
- Apply petroleum jelly to the watermark and let it sit overnight.
3. Repairing wooden legs of chair
Clean the old glue from the mortise and tenon. Then fill the mortise about halfway with epoxy. Set chair leg (tenon)
into mortise, align and clamp. Some joints are just too damaged to allow for a tight glue joint, especially when
repairing areas that have broken several times.
4. Repairing loose or broken chair parts
Step 1: Materials. drill.
Step 2: Assess the Damage and Glue. Assess the damage and apply wood glue to the broken area, clamp and tape so
that it does not move. ...
Step 3: Drill. Make sure that you have painters tape wrapped all the area that you are. ...
Step 4: Glue. ...
Step 5: Drill and Glue Again. ...
Step 6: Add More Pegs and Finish.
5. Changing the fabric of a seat cushion
1. Remove Seat Cushion
2. Cut New Foam
3. Cut New Fabric
4. Cut and Attach Batting
5. Attach Fabric
6. Reattach Seat Cushion to Chair Frame
