SMAW (Common Questions)

The document discusses recommendations for setting up and performing SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding), also known as stick welding. It recommends cleaning the work area, clamping the work close to the weld, and inserting the electrode into an insulated holder. The correct amperage should be set based on the electrode manufacturer's recommendations. The best arc length is determined by holding the electrode about 1/8 inch or the diameter of the electrode core from the base material. A chipping hammer should be available to remove slag before subsequent weld passes.

SMAW operation Set-up

1. Clean the workplace

2. Clamp the work close to the weld
3. Insert the electrode into the insulated holder. Set amperageat levels reccomended by the
electrode manufacturer.
4. Determine the best arc length.
5. Have a chipping hammer available to remove any slag and before doing a second pass with the
weld.

What is the difference between 6011 and 6013 welding rods?

ELECTRODES are made not born….. while the 6011 specifically designed for AC machine, it can also run
on DC giving advantage over 6010 electrodes ( which can only do direct current electrode positive)
6013 a common mistake for stick welders is to treat their 6013 electrodes like 6011 or 6010 rods.

What do Welding rod numbers mean?

The “E” indicates an arc welding electrode.

The first two digits of a four digit number and the first three digits of a five digit number stands for
tensile strenghts.
Ex..E6010…60 means tensile strenght 60.000 pound per square inch.(PSI) or
E10018..100 means 100.000 pound per square inch (PSI) tensile strenght

What size of Electrode should I use?

EECTRODE SIZE AND AMPERAGE USE AMPERAGE PLATE

______________________________ ______________ _____________

1/16” 20-40 UP TO 3/16”

3/32” 40- 125 UP TO ¼”

1/8 75- 185 OVER 1/8”
_____________________________________________________________________________________

5/32” 105-250 OVER ¼”

WHAT AMPS FOR STICK WELDING?

The correct current or amperage, setting primarily depends on the diameter and type of Electrode
selected
ex… a 1/8 inch 6010 rod runs well from 75 t0 125 amps.
While a 5/32” inch 7018 rods weld at currents up to 220 amps.

WHAT IS THE CORRECT ARC LENGTH FOR SMAW?

The correct arc length varies with each electrode and application. As a good starting point.
Arc length should not exceed the diameter of the metal portion (core) of the electrode.
Ex…. An 1/8 inch 6010 electrode is held about 1/8 inch off the base material.

WHAT IS E6013 USE FOR?

The E6013 is often use in situation that involve irregular or short welds that require a change in position
because it provides a very stable arc and a smooyh finish.
-----6013 is commonly used by beginners..more advance welders will used a DC machine and use 6010
for deep penetration. And 7018 for fill and cap passes the amperage depend upon the metal thickness
and rod diameter.

WHAT DOES SMAW MEAN IN WELDING?

Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) also known as Manual Metal Arc Welding (MMA or MMAW)
Flux shielded arc welding or informally as stick welding . is a manual arc welding process that uses a
consumable electrode covered with a flux to lay the weld.
