SMAW (Common Questions)
SMAW (Common Questions)
ELECTRODES are made not born….. while the 6011 specifically designed for AC machine, it can also run
on DC giving advantage over 6010 electrodes ( which can only do direct current electrode positive)
6013 a common mistake for stick welders is to treat their 6013 electrodes like 6011 or 6010 rods.
The correct current or amperage, setting primarily depends on the diameter and type of Electrode
selected
ex… a 1/8 inch 6010 rod runs well from 75 t0 125 amps.
While a 5/32” inch 7018 rods weld at currents up to 220 amps.
The correct arc length varies with each electrode and application. As a good starting point.
Arc length should not exceed the diameter of the metal portion (core) of the electrode.
Ex…. An 1/8 inch 6010 electrode is held about 1/8 inch off the base material.
The E6013 is often use in situation that involve irregular or short welds that require a change in position
because it provides a very stable arc and a smooyh finish.
-----6013 is commonly used by beginners..more advance welders will used a DC machine and use 6010
for deep penetration. And 7018 for fill and cap passes the amperage depend upon the metal thickness
and rod diameter.
Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) also known as Manual Metal Arc Welding (MMA or MMAW)
Flux shielded arc welding or informally as stick welding . is a manual arc welding process that uses a
consumable electrode covered with a flux to lay the weld.
