Univ. Roll No. ........................

Program/ Course: M. Tech. (Sem.1st)
Name of Subject: Advanced Relaying and Protection
Subject Code: MTEE-202
Paper ID:

Time Allowed: 3 Hours

Max.Marks: 100
Note:
1. Attempt any five questions.
2. Any missing data may be assumed appropriately.

1. (i) A 20MVA transformer which is used to operate at 30% overload feeds an 11 KV bus-
bar through a circuit breaker. The transformer is equipped with a 1000/5 current
transformer and a feeder circuit breaker with 400/5 current transformer and both the
transformers fed IDMTL Relay having the following characteristics.
PLUG SETTING MULTIPLIER 2 3 5 10 15 20

TIME (SEC) 10 6 4.1 3 2.5 2.2

The relay on the feeder circuit breaker has 125% plug setting and a 0.3 time multiplier
setting. If a fault current of 5000A flows from the transformer to feeder, determine:
a) Operating time of feeder relay
b) Suggest suitable plug setting and time multiplier setting of the transformer relay to
ensure adequate discrimination of 0.5 sec between the transformer relay and feeder
relay. [15]

(ii) An inverse time relay is one in which the operating time is approximately inversely
proportional to the magnitude of the actuating quantity. Illustrate using time current
characteristics. [5]

2. A 3-phase, 200MVA, 11/0.4 KV transformer is connected as delta/star. The protection

transformer on the 0.4 KV side has turn ratio of 500/5. What will be the CT ratio on the
high voltage side? Also obtain the circulating current when the fault of 750A of the
following types occurred on the low voltage side:
i) earth fault in the protection zone
ii) earth fault outside the protection zone
iii) phase to phase fault within the protection zone
iv) phase to phase fault outside the protection zone
[20]
3. Give the concept of modern coordinated control system explaining the block diagram of
microprocessor based digital relaying system and enumerating the advantages of
numerical relaying. [20]

4. i) Illustrate the various components of digital signal processing. [10]

ii) Explain the principle of operation of Microprocessor basedImpedance Relaywith
flowchart and block diagram. [10]

5. Explain the following wire pilot protection schemes

(i) Circulating current scheme
(ii) Opposed voltage scheme. [10, 10]

6. Write short notes on

i) SCADA based protection systems
ii) Ground faults and protection [10, 10]

7. What type of protective device are used for protection of an alternator against
overheating of its
i) Stator ii) Rotor? Discuss. [20]

8. Discuss with necessary circuit diagram a typical directional over current relay. Draw
with necessary circuit diagrams the a) 30 0 connection b) 90 0 connection as
applied to direction relay.
