Magnaye, Kimberly Wealth M - Assessment 2

This document discusses three reinforced concrete structures in the Philippines - the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Mall of Asia Arena, and innovative concrete production using autoclaved aerated concrete. It analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of the Cultural Center and Mall of Asia Arena, which use traditional reinforced concrete as well as other materials like travertine and glass. It then examines autoclaved aerated concrete as an innovative concrete production method, concluding it would be suitable for the Philippines due to advantages like cost reduction and faster construction.

BUILDING DESIGN MODULE I: CONCRETE

MAGNAYE, KIMBERLY WEALTH M.

BSCE 4-1

Activity/Assessment:
1. Research at least three (3) complex structures in the Philippines made of
reinforced concrete that has been modified either with admixture or on its
reinforcement. Analyze their strengths and weaknesses as compared to
the conventional concrete.

CULTURAL CENTER OF THE PHILIPPINES (CCP)

Cultural Center of the Philippines
(National Theater) - The façade of the
National Theater is dominated by a two-
storey travertine block suspended 12
meters high by deep concave cantilevers
on three sides.
The rest of the structure is clad in
concrete, textured by crushed seashells
originally found on the reclamation site.
The building is built on a massive
podium, and entry is through a vehicular
ramp in front of the raised lobby and a
pedestrian side entry on its northwest
side.

MALL OF ASIA ARENA

The Mall of Asia Arena was designed
by architecture firm Arquitectonica. The
facility was intended primarily as a venue
for concert and basketball games but can
be reconfigured to accommodate other
sporting and entertainment events as well.
It has a seating capacity of 15,000 but can
host as much as 20,000 people in a full-
house capacity.
The indoor arena stands on a 16,000 m2 (170,000 sq ft) had a floor area of
52,000 m2 (560,000 sq ft). The limited area of the site meant that part of the
building to span over an adjacent road. Due to a high water table, the
construction of basement parking levels was limited and a separate eight-storey
parking building which can accommodate 1,400 vehicles had to be built. The
facade of the building are covered with low-e coated and fritted insulated glass
units.

The structure hosting the events space was designed in a form of an eye which
was supported by a slanted podium plinth.

2. Study the innovative method of concrete production - Autoclaved Aerated

Concrete. Do you think it will be suitable to the Philippine setting? Why or
Why not?

Autoclaved aerated concrete is a kind of wall material with many

advantages, such as heat preservation, fire prevention, sound insulation,
moisture-proof, environmental protection, recycled using etc. The AAC products
with porous structure are lighter, and easier to cut, drill and construct which
saves the labour cost.

The Autoclaved Aerated Concrete production process includes raw material

preparation, batching and mixing, pouring, precuring, cutting, autoclaving, and
packing. With decades of experience in serving the AAC production machinery
industry, we can supply customers with quality AAC block/ panel plant solutions
with capacity ranging from 80,000m3 to 40,000m3 per year.

I think it will be suitable to the Philippine setting since the Philippines

has a financial problem. Not only this will reduce the cost of construction but
will effectively speed up the duration of the project which is perhaps Value
Engineering.
