This module presents the third largest continent in the world, ranking behind Asia and Africa – the first
and second biggest continents, respectively. North Americas is contained entirely within the Northern
and western Hemispheres. It is surrounded by three largest oceans in the world , namely the Atlantic ,
Arctic and Pacific Oceans.

2. Name the national facts and information of each country, state and territories;
3. Explain the tourism appeal of the countries, state and territories of North and Central America.

1.5.1 North America

North America is the northern part of the landmass generally referred to as the New World, the western
hemisphere or simply the Americas. The word America originates from Italian explorer Amerigo
Vespucci’s name. Mainland North America is shaped more or less like a triangle, with its base in the
north and its apex in the south. Associated with the continent is Greenland, the largest island in the world
and the Aleutian Islands.

1.5.2 Canada
Canada is a nation in the north of North America. The 10 provinces and 3 territories of Canada stretch
from the Caribbean to the Pacific Ocean and north to the Arctic Ocean. It is considered to be the second
biggest country in the world in terms of the total land area. The three main metropolitan areas are
Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.

The 10 provinces of Canada and their capital cities are;


1. Alberta – Edmonton
2. British Columbia – Victoria
3. Manitoba – Winnipeg
4. New Brunswick – Fredericton
5. Newfoundland and Labrador – St. John’s
6. Nova Scotia – Halifax
7. Ontario – Toronto
8. Prince Edward Island – Charlottetown
9. Quebec – Quebec City
10. Saskatchewan – Regina

The main attractions of Canada are;


 Niagara Falls
 Banff National Park
 Toronto’s CN Tower
 Old Quebec
 Whistler
 Ottawa’s Parliament Hill
 Old Montreal
 Polar Bears of Churchhill, Manitoba
 Vancouver’s Stanley Park
 Victoria’s Inner Harbour

1.5.3 Greenland

Greenland is considered as the largest island in the world between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans, to
the east of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. The name Greenland means “People’s Country”. It is an
autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark.
Greenland holds the world’s second largest ice sheet after Antarctica. It is popular for its amazing
glaciers and vast tundra. It is rich in natural resources such as iron ore, lead, zinc, diamonds, gold,
elements of rare earth, uranium and oil.
“Kayak” and “igloo” are said to be the words that originated in Greenland, which were eventually
adopted by other countries’ languages. Majority of the tourism in Greenland revolves around flora and
fauna.

Famous attractions and destinations:


 Illulissat Ice-fjord
 Nuuk and the Greenland National Museum
 The Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis)
 Uunartoq Hot Springs
 Viking Ruins
 Sermermiut Eskimo Settlement

Other popular activities in Greenland are:


 Walking on the ice cap from Kangerlussuaq;
 Dog sledding and snowmobile tours;
 Exploring the towns by boat and ferries;
 Whale watching;
 Hiking;

1.5.4 United States of America


USA is a federal republic country of 50 states. Besides the 48 states occupying the middle
latitudes of the continent, the USA includes the state of Alaska, the northwestern extreme of North
America, and the island state of Hawaii, in the mid-Pacific Ocean. The USA is the fourth largest country
in the world in terms of land area (after Russia, Canada and China). The capital city of USA is
Washington.

 Alabama is also called the Yellowhammer, Heart of Dixie and the Cotton Kingdom.
 Alaska is also known as the “Last Frontier” and “Land of the Midnight Sun”.
 Arizona is also known as the “Grand Canyon State” and the “Copper State”.
 Arkansas is known to be the only U.S. state producing diamonds.
 California is a western US state that extends nearly 900 miles from the Mexican border to the
Pacific Ocean.
 Colorado is known for its colorful scenery of trees, mountains, hills canyons, plateaus, rivers
and desert lands.
 Connecticut is the southernmost state in northeastern United States New England region.
 Delaware is the first state that ratified the constitution of the USA in 1787, thus, its official state
name became the “First State”.
 Florida fondly called as the “Sunshine State”.
 Georgia is located in the southeastern region of the USA. Georgia was named after King
George II of England and it is considered as the largest state east of the Mississippi River.
 Hawaii is fondly called as the “Aloha State”.
 Idaho is also called the “Gem State” due to the abundance of precious and semi-precious
stones throughout the state.
 Illinois is called the “Land of Lincoln”.
 Indiana is fondly called as the “Land of the Indians”.
 Iowa is famed for its corn, morel and state fairs. Iowa was named after Iowa river.
 Kansas is called the breadbasket of the country.
 Kentucky originates its name from the Indian word that means “dark and bloody ground”.
 Louisiana is situated on the southeastern side of the Gulf of Mexico. It is renowned for its annual
Mardi Gras parties and great entertainment.
 Maine is also known as the “Pine Tree State”.
 Maryland is famous for its beautiful harbor and unique museums.
 Massachusetts has Boston as its capital.
 Michigan this is known as the “Wolverine State”.
 Minnesota is in the west north central part of the USA. Minnesota means “sky tinted waters” or
“sky blue waters”.
 Mississippi is a state located in the southeastern region of the USA. The state was named after
the Mississippi River.
 Missouri got its name after the Missouri River as given by the Native Missouri Indians, a Siouan
language tribe.
 Montana is situated in the Northwestern USA. This state’s name came from the Spanish word
“montana”, which means “mountain” or “mountainous country”.
 Nebraska is bounded by South Dakota to the north; Iowa to the east and Missouri to the
southeast. The capital is Lincoln.
 Nevada The capital is Carson City. Nevada is the driest state in the US and most of the state is
deserted.
 New Hampshire is known for its many granite quarries; hence called the “Granite State”.

 New Jersey one of the 13 states of the USA, is also known as the Garden State.
 New Mexico is southwestern US territory whose varied geography includes the Chihuahuan
Desert and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
 New York capital is Albany. New York is popularly known as “The City that Never Sleeps” and
“The Big Apple”.
 North Carolina became popular all over the world when the Wright Brothers took their First
Flight on Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
 North Dakota is recognized as the Peach Garden State in memory of the International Peach
Garden , situated on the state boundary of Manitoba, Canada.
 Ohio is a Midwestern US state that extends from the Ohio River and Appalachian Mountains in
the south to Lake Erie in the north.
 Oklahoma is bordered by the state of Texas to the south and west, Kansas to the north,
Missouri to the north , Arkansas to the east, New Mexico to the west and Colorado to the
northwest. The capital and largest city is Oklahoma.
 Oregon is known as the Beaver State because of the connection of beavers with the early
history of the State and because of the admirable qualities of intellect, enterprise and ingenuity
associated with this creature.
 Pennsylvania is a state situated in the northeastern region, Great Lakes, Appalachian, and Mid-
Atlantic areas of USA. The root of the name Pennsylvania came from “Penn’s Wood” after
admiral William Penn’s father.
 Rhode Island is bordered to the west by Connecticut to the north and east by Massachusetts,
and to the south by the Atlantic Ocean via Rhode Island sound and Block island sound. The
name of the state originated in the Greek island of Rhodes.
 South Carolina derived its name from the Latin word for Charles, honoring King Charles I of
England.
 South Dakota is also named the “State of Mount Rushmore” in memory of US presidents’
mountain carving in the Black Hills.
 Tennessee is also known as “The Volunteer State” a nickname earned during the 1812 war due
to thousands of Tennessee volunteer soldiers who fought during the Battle of New Orleans.
 Texas is called the “Lone Star State”. It is the only state that has the flags of six different nations
to fly over it – the Spain, France, Mexico , The Republic of Texas, the Confederate States and
the USA.
 Utah is called the “Beehive State” , reflecting the qualities of industry, perseverance, desire,
resilience and self-reliance.
 Vermont is known for food such as Vermont cheddar cheese, maple syrup and the ever-
popular Ben & Jerry’s ice cream.
 Virginia the province of Virginia has been named after “Virgin Queen” Elizabeth of England.
Tobacco is a major crop in this state.
 Washington is named after the first USA President George Washington. Olympia is its capital.
Washington state is the only state named after a president of the USA.
 West Virginia known as “Mountain State” because it is completely covered by the Applachian
Mountains.
 Wisconsin is known as “America’s Dairyland” since it is one of the leading dairy producers in
the country.
 Wyoming is a state in western mountain region oof the US Cheyenne is its capital city.
 Mexico is renowned for its long stretches of pristine beaches, numerous white sands and
stunning resorts along the coast.

1.5.5 Central America


Central America comprises the countries located between Mexico and South America.

 Belize it was formerly a British colony , also known as British Honduras. The capital is
Belmopan while Belize City is the largest city and the site of the country’s international airport,
Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport.
 Costa Rica it is divided into seven provinces namely: San Jose, which serves as the capital,
Catago, Heredia, Guanacaste, Limon, Alajuela, and Puntarenas.
 El Salvador the capital is San Salvador which literally translates in Spanish as “Holy Savior”.

 Nicaragua is dubbed as “The Land of Lakes and Volcanoes”.


 Guatamela the capital is guatamela city and Spanish is the official language.
 Honduras known for its Spanish colonial structure like the Plaza Morazan.
 Panama is bordered by Costa rica and Colombia. Panama is the largest and the capital city of
the nation.

1.5.6 The Caribbean


The Caribbean is a region of the Americas, consisting of the Caribbean Sea, its islands and the
coasts around it. The region is located southeast of the Gulf of Mexico and the North American
mainland, east of Central America and north of South America. It has been said that the regions were
discovered by Christopher Columbus during the 14th century.

 Puerto Rico means “Rich port” in Spanish , famous for its colonial buildings and massive
fortresses.
 Cuba is popular with its beaches and bays. One of the major agricultural crops here is
sugarcane.
 Aruba is known for its beautiful beaches and considered as one of the best wreck diving
destination in the Caribbean region.
 Bahamas is famously known for its beautiful, luxurious beach hotels. It is famous because of its
scenic beauty and all year round tropical weather.
 Barbados is an eastern Caribbean Island and an independent British Commonwealth nation
famous for each beaches and botanical gardens.
 British Virgin Islands is a British colony composed of four large islands, namely: Tortola,
Anegada, Virgin Gorda, and Jost Van Dyke , plus 50 smaller islands and cays.
 Curacao is a Dutch Caribbean island and is known for its cove tucked beaches and vast marine
rich coral reefs.
 Grand Cayman is the largest of three Cayman Islands with George Town as its capital.
 Grenada is dubbed the “Spice Isle” due to its production of nutmeg and mace crops.
 Jamaica is known for rum, reggae music, Bob Marley, sunny weather and fine white sand
beaches.
 Dominica known for its lush scenery and diverse flora and fauna, it is called the “nature island of
the Caribbean”.
 Saint Lucia The Pitons dubbed to be the most photographed location in the Caribbean and the
world’s most popular mountain pair, are a must-see for anyone visiting the island.
 St. Maarten/St. Martin is renowned on its Dutch side of the island for its festive nightlife,
beaches , jewelry, drinks made with guava berry liquors based on native rum and casinos.
 St. Kitts was known throughout the world because of its sugar cane plantations.
 Guadeloupe is an overseas French territory group of islands in the Southern Caribbean Sea.
Carbet Falls, a tourist attraction in Guadeloupe.
 Trinidad and Tobago is well known for its steel pans, carnival celebrations, Caribbean dance,
gorgeous beaches, lush greenery and musical styles.
 US Virgin Islands is composed of four larger islands: St. Croix, St. Thomas, St. John, and Water
island and some 50 smaller islets and cays.
